I apologize if this thread has been posted before I was just curious as to what others here on Dakka Dakka think is the best use of the Destroyer Lord as a Second HQ in a Necron army of reasonable size

Sadly destroyer Lords don't allow you to take a court with them which I feel relegates them to the position of secondary HQ as crypteks are simply too versatile and fit in every army build. With this assumption I was trying to find a place for my D-Lord. In the old codex I loved running him with scarabs using the extra wounds and improved cover save to deliver him right into enemy lines. In the new codex this doesn't seem like a viable option as the D-Lord is now jump infantry and scarabs are now beasts.

The most promising combination I've seen presented here is attaching him to a Wraith unit making a nasty counter assault unit. I tried a unit of 5 wraiths with 2 whip Coils and a D-Lord with MSS in my last 3 games. While not bad, I was burned several times as the wraiths loose their Wraithflight when the D-Lord is attached. While not a bad fit something about it didn't feel right.

The final combination I've seen thrown out there is to attach him to a squad of Triarch Praetorians while this unit does not have any problems with it as messing together goes, adding a 145+ point Lord to a bad unit does not make it a good unit.

Those are the three units that I've seen tested. I've also thought about attaching him to Immortals and even Spyder squads using him to break up my large scarab tar pits that are sure to form. Yet this seems to underutilized his mobility.

Really as I look at the Destroyer Lord it is a good unit without a proper home. I'm just curious as to other peoples experience with their D-Lord and how they run him.

All I've ever done is run it with a Warscythe and some other gear and boost it toward tanks.
He might get killed eventually. But not before he cuts up a vehicle or two.

I'd say wraiths over praetorians - while the res orb is indeed nice for the praetorians, a severe lack of invul save makes the entire unit easy targets.

Wraiths are very formidable so even if you assault a vehicle, pop it, and then you get assaulted by whatever is inside, the wraiths are kicking them down to I1 with the whip coils so you should be hitting first still.

I love the dlords as support to wraiths, but most of the time wraiths dont need help, and versus units wraiths do need help against, like thss termie blocks or multiwound deathstars the s7 won't instant kill multi wound models and with no inv save and only 1 mss big termie units will benefit from swinging into him. Missile units commonly fire 4 shots at once, so he also doesnt complete solve wraiths s8 shooting woes.

Well, It really depends on the list. I see the Destroyer lords fitting in very well as a secondary HQ, after You've gotten the compulsory Overlord. It really depends on how many Crypteks (and how many unique wargear choices you need) you use in your list. I only use one courts worth in most of mine, so I could see Taking a Destroyer lord very easy. I just generally prefer a Second barge lord.

Really though, a Wraith unit with D lord with MSS and the Sempiternal weave is pretty much good at everything. With combination of the Whip Coils from the Wraiths, and the MSS you really don't even need an invulnerable on the Dlord. The Wraiths can absorb any shooting that would require an Invul.

I'd like to run a two D-Lord List at some point :-)
1500pts
D-Lord
D-Lord with Orb
-
5xPraetorians with Void/Caster
-
6xWraiths
-
5xWarriors in a Night Scythe x 4
---------------------

Anyway, you can put him with Wraiths or with Praetorians.

Right now, I run him with 5 Praetorians with Voidblade and Particle Caster and have had reasonably good success. The Praetorians by themselves are rather middling, but with the D-Lord with a 2+ save and hopping up the field getting cover, this unit usually assaults turn 2 and generally kills lots of things.

Some anecdotal evidence for you (*laughs*), the last time I ran this unit it killed
1) Lash Prince
2) Another Lash Prince
3) Unit from a popped Rhino
4) Terminator Unit
5) Rest of a Plauge Marine Unit
6) Rest of a Daemon Unit

It doesn't always do that well, but it generally makes up its points.
