So after ages using hybrid and mech I have finally started to give foot Guard a go. I am finding it really fun too. So, here is the list I am thinking of taking to my next game:

CCS - Lascannon, MoO, Standard, Bodyguard - 130

Stormtroopers - 2 x PG - 115

Platoon A - 600
- PCS - 4 x GL
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- HWS - 3 x AC
- HWS - 3 x LC

Platoon B - 585
- PCS - 4 x GL
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- HWS - 3 x AC
- HWS - 3 x ML

Manticore
Manticore

Total - 1750

So the plan is for the CCS, manticores and HWSs to cover the advance of the infantry. The standard helps to keep the HWSs in place. The PCSs are there to give "move!" orders whilst being able to threaten rhinos and the like by shooting over the blobs. I have played them with heavy weapons but found that my run rolls were poor and really wished I had them along on the advance, so I got some extra HWSs to replace them. I think that I may have overdone it on the HWSs but thought that just a single LC squad would be too much of a prime target.

I was thinking of getting a 3rd manticore but have not got around to buying one yet, so for the near future that isn't an option. I was thinking of getting powerfists and powerfist commissars in my PCS squads so that they could charge things the blobs engage and break the deadlock by only engaging a small portion of the enemy, reducing the risk of them all dying. However, that makes the PCS squads quite expensive and prone to just getting shot.

Thoughts?

Drop the ML HWS to ACs or upgrade it to LCs.

To really make your HWSs effective, you should get a Lord Commissar, as his 'Aura of Discipline' will do more for them then the Standard. But with a generic CCS, I would keep the Standard. I also like to give the Lord a Camo Cloak, and on rare occasions I even put him in a HWS just to make it Stubborn and for 3+ Cover saves, but you also risk the 'Execution' rule doing this, as Orders are Ld tests. The Cloak does keep him alive longer, and I like to even give him a Bolter instead of CCWs, but it really doesn't matter and is totally up to you.

As for the CCS, what does the Body guard give you to make him worth it? He could be a plasma gun for your CCS or for 5pts more be Camo Cloaks to really improve their survivability.

I will strongly advise you from scatterable artillery when the goal of your list is to get in close combat with the enemy. Scatter into your troops and your doing the work for your enemy. I, personally, would rather have direct fire weapon support. I would otherwise go straight gunline with my infantry if you wish to use the artillery. MoO is really bad, but if you issue 'Bring it Down!' to your own CCS to fire on a vehicle or MC, you can at least make him twin linked (you can re-roll the scatter dice).

Your blobs should probably have Melta bombs on the sergeants for walker defence, otherwise they look solid.

If you have to have the Manticores, use them carefully. Don't get me wrong, they are a solid weapon system, but I feel they do not fit your list the best. If you replace them, I would seriously consider Creed, as he should have the range to give your blobs 'For Cadia!' on the charge. With the other 200+ points, there are several ways to fill in. Lord Commissar and another HWS or two come into mind. I would even look at a OotF if your down to 30-ish points.

Good luck and I hope this gives you some food for thought!

Thanks for the reply BlkTom.

I may change the missiles to lascannons, although I would have to build another unit as I only have 3 lascannons built at the moment, although a 4th is nearly done.

I have tried the commissar lord but find him a waste hanging around the back simply for orders. I would rather just have another unit. Also, there is no need to worry about him executing on failed orders. Execution only occurs on moral checks, orders are leadership checks.

The bodyguard was because I had 15pts spare.

I do get what you are saying about blasts but I thought that the long range horde slaying, along with the awesome AT potential, made it worth it. I tend to call down fire very close to my own units, I find it rather fun. Born Guard commander eh? Also, I find the str10 to be invaluable against things like paladins and other allocation based squads.

I considered melta bombs but thought that I was better off trying to kill the dreadnoughts before they got into combat, rather than chuck a few bombs at them and hope for some 6s to hit.

Given me some food for thought though, let me see if I can tweak my list a bit:

CCS - Lascannon, MoO, Standard, OoF - 145

Stormtroopers - 2 x PG - 115

Platoon A - 495
- PCS - Lascannon
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- HWS - 3 x AC

Platoon B - 495
- PCS - Lascannon
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun, Commissar w/ PW
- Infantry - PW, Meltagun
- HWS - 3 x AC

Demolisher - Lascannon - 180
Manticore
Manticore

Total - 1750

So I switched the PCS squads back to long range support, as after getting rid of the HWSs I needed more back line ranged units. It does mean that orders are less useful but we shall see how it goes. The demolisher gives an armour target that should soak some fire and stops the manticores being the only armour on the field, as that sounds like a recipe for dead manticores. It can also deal with those DSing paladins that I hate so much, or at least puts a dent in them before they start spreading wounds around. Spare points went on an OoF, although I get the feeling that my CCS is a bit bloated now.

If you want, since your CCS and PCS have empty special weapon slots, take the Lascannon off of the Demolisher and get 3 Voxs for your CCS and the PCSs to help with Orders.
