I'm not a huge fan of the dreadknight model (as most people aren't) and was considering starting a GK army, how well of a counts as is the FW Contemptor dreadnought.

Well, I guess it could work. You'll have to stick an infantry model onto it, just to make sure. If you have a baby model, that'll be even better.
Though really, it should be allright I think. Just make it clear to your opponent beforehand, have it in your list with the right weapons modelled and it should be fine.
And if it doesn't work, you at least will have a kickass model in your collection, so its really a win win scenario.

I'd been thinking the same, I can't imagine any reasonable person objecting, particularly since the Dreadknight is such a comically awful model.

It wouldn't work unless you were willing to make the Contemptor wider and taller, In games this would make a massive difference as the Comtemptor would be able to hide easier and therefore again the rules.

the Dreadknight is such a comically awful model.
It's a great looking model. The only problem is its lack of available poses.
Even if you were to cleverly convert it to a cool pose you would have to make the grey knight pilot doing the same pose.
I still don't believe it has a place in the game. Should have saved it for an Ad Mech release.

Just to rock the boat here, I really, really like the dreadknight, mine is a great figure.
And I really, really dislike the contemptor dreadnought model, which I saw a few of at Warhammer World and was massively underwhelmed.
Stick with the dreadknight...

Well if Height is an issue I could always model it on a scenic base, I saw someone that had a crouching Wraithlord, but It was on top of some ruins so it was about the same height.

I love the Contemptor but it's only a tiny bit taller than a regular dreadnought. I don't think it would work.

Until someone in a tournament starts bitching about line of sight.
Run one as a venerable dread or as an actual Contempor dreadnought. They're just too tiny for Dreadknights.

So even I did model it with a scenic base? Like it standing on stairs/a ruin or something. Or would they complain about the size of the base? or just how beefy the model is?!?

I don't think you will have problems with a Contemptor counting as a Dreadknight 99% of the time. The vast majority of people think its an awful model so you can justify it that way.
Rule of Cool applies to this situation as well.
And finally, altering a model's cover profile cuts both ways. Its easier to get cover for it, but it also means it will have less visability for its weapons(giving cover to its enemies more often)
the cover benifit is negligable, anything that can hide a Contemptor can probably hide a Dreadknight too.
and besides, Dreadknights are a unit that is usually operating pretty close to its enemies, and as such are less likely to get cover anyway.

This is not right.
A building may not obstruct a Dreadknight, but it may also obstruct a Contemptor.
As you said, it's a CC Unit, so it has little ranged weaponary to speak of unless you arm it that way.
Finally, remember that MCs have move through cover. They can hide behind walls, and if they are short enough they cannot be seen, but still being able to charge.

Elevate it on a scenic base, swap weapons and I'd say good for a tournament. I'd play against it a friendly game the way it is thought.

I wouldnt have any problems with it though true acceptance is really more up to your local gaming community. If your just playing with your friends your not likely to have any problems but you could run into some issues if your playing outside your circle or at events
