A few weeks ago, I wiped out a friend's unit of Necron Lychguard in CC, which would normally result in the loss of all of his Reanimation Protocols tokens. There was, however, a Cryptek attached to the squad (who also fell casualty), that would still get a chance to stand up because he had Ever-Living. My friend argued that the fact that the Cryptek could still stand up meant that the unit was not definitively wiped out and that the Lychguard would still receive Reanimation Protocols if the Cryptek made his roll. We checked the Ever-living and Reanimation Protocols rules in the Necron Codex, which said that "independent characters attached to the unit aren't enough to give them their Reanimation Protocols rolls." My friend said that the Cryptek wasn't an IC but an attached character (on which point I agree), meaning he was part of the unit (to which I also agree) and therefore would allow them to take their Reanimation Protocols (to which I don't agree). I argued that there were no longer any living models in the unit (only tokens, but they don't come into it as they're not actual models) and therefore all of the Reanimation Protocols tokens would disappear, as per the Reanimation Protocols rule, and he would only get to roll for his Cryptek. I also said that, even if the Reanimation Protocols tokens weren't removed, he still wouldn't get to roll for them, as all of the Reanimation Protocols rolls in a unit have to be made simultaneously and he couldn't roll for the tokens as long as the Cryptek was still a casualty. Though he eventually agreed to drop the point to avoid holding up the game, he appeared incapable of listening to reason on both points.

Was I correct, or am I massively misinterpreting the rules?

on the forum. Obviously

The Cryptek is not the same model as the squad he was attached to, so no, the lychguard would not get their RPs. The cryptek may still get one, however.

Every time this has come up here it's been the same answer. You are correct, as the unit is effectively wiped, only models with EL get to make their rolls.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Re-read the last paragraph in the Reanimation Protocols rule, on page 29 of Codex: Necrons.

It doesn't say anything about Independent Characters, it only mentions characters, which Crypteks are.

So, you were correct. You both misread the rule at the time.
