Playing a "typical" game is suggested on a 4x6' board.
However, we played out first 1750 game today and noticed that the board
was feeling very tight. This was Eldar vs SM.
Next week we will play 1750 with Orks vs SM and I'm the Orks.
I'm wondering if I will even have enough room to actually field 90 boys, plus others.
What do you guys run for board dimensions at 1500, 1750, and 2k?

4X6 for everything up to 2500 points. At 2500 I usually like 4x8.

In all seriousness, most armies, SM's in particular, can function on a 4x4 up to 2k. I don't know why the board feels 'tight' to you, unless your group hasn't yet figured out that having units too far away from each other is a big no-no. Once units get isolated, they tend to die quickly.

6x4 is usually enough for a 1750pt game. It can feel pretty crowded with large model count armies (which is basically the point of those armies), but more often than not it should be fine. I often find that there's a significant chunk of the table that doesn't even get touched by miniatures in my games, but then I play mechanised Chaos (i.e. a relatively small number of models).

It's really only at 2500pts or so that I start to feel really crowded on a 6x4 table.

I play Orks, and fitting a 2000 point Kan Wall army can be a chore for deployment - my army literally takes up my entire deployment zone (don't get me started on spearhead!). But I've never found 4x6 too small or cramped even with me taking 120+ models. Once they get out of the deployment area, there's still plenty of room to move around.

Remember though, you only need about 25% terrain covering the board. I found that when I first started playing, we always had too much terrain on the board.

You can also just use a bigger board if you find 4x6 too small, but that deviates from the standard.

You felt a 4' x 6' table was tight with Eldar and Space Marines? Really?

I routinely play on a 4' x 6' table with up to 2000 points. Consisting of; Space Marine, Necrons, Orks, Choas, Imperial Guard and Tau. Never had a problem with space.

In fact the table we play on can be 4' x 8', but we had to much room on that so we shrunk it down to 4' x 6'. Using the extra 2 feet for dice, books and such.

Maybe you are using to much terrain. Witch would be a switch. Most people, just starting out, if in fact you are just starting out, us to little.

Well, in all fairness, I was only a spectator tonight, and I believe we were using a crap ton of terrain (It looks so cool).
I have played 1500 pt Kanwall Orks on a spearhead (Like Dodgy mentioned) and it took up all my free space (with terrain in the way) to deploy.
I was thinking that people would tell me that 4x6 is the way to go, but I wanted to hear it. I guess I'll just have to pack that 1750 Kanwall in where I Kan.

Thanks for the feedback!

Back in 2nd edition, GW had a 'rule of thumb' of 2 feet of table per 500 points. At that point, armies were slightly smaller, but weapons were longer ranged, and standard 2000 point games were usually best on a 4'x8' table.

When 3rd edition rolled in, a 1500 point army became roughly the equivalent of a 2nd edition 2000 point army, ranges shrank a little, and the 'standard' table shrank to 4'x6'.

The further you go over 1500 points, the more cramped it will get. For 2000 points, unless you're holding a lot in Reserve, 4'x8' would be the way to go.

We use 4' X 6' for battles up to 4k points each side.

We do not have much trouble with movement and deployment in those bigger games on a 4' X 6'

You might be tight on deployment if you try to deploy 90 boys + assorted vehicles and you wind up with table quarter deployment.

The 6x4 board is standard size though and that's what reserves are for.

Also as for the thinned out units, I've used an outriding Nob Biker squad to great effect in a 2500 pt game, but it has to be against squishy melee units, bulk of army on one side, bikers turboboosting to assault range on the other. Guard opponent had no idea what to shoot at.
