Subject: Looking for Modern/Future Rules Set

Ladies and Gents I'm looking for a rule set and not sure where to start. Criteria is modern through futuristic time frame. I want it to be as realistic as possible/practical, I'd prefer it to be designed for the 28mm +\- range, and most importantly I'd like it to be a very thorough rule set. Any and all inputs are welcome.

I second the sugestion for Force on Force. It has rules for anything from IEDs to Drones. You can use it for anything from a bank robery to 80's WW3.
If you wan't to go further into the future you have Tomorrow's War from the same company that uses the same basic mechanics but goes into power armour and lasors...

I'm a big Force on Force fan (and you'll find my name in the book as a playtester, and I wrote the tactics section).
Having said that, it is hard to say it is what you are looking for without more info. You mention looking for something for 28mm, that may mean you want to run just a small handful of figures. In FoF, the player generally takes on the role of a platoon leader and worries about fire teams and squads. Movement and firing is at that level, not the individual trooper. If you are looking for a set where each trooper acts independently, FoF may not really be what you are lookign for...
Some of my favorite 28mm moderns are the ones done by Eureka (their SEALs are just fantastic!) and Empress Miniatures.
There are some more detailed skirmish type rules out there like SOF Warrior: http://www.brittonpublishers.com/SOF_Warrior.html
If you give us more detail about what you are looking for, we can make better recommendations. Do you as the player want to be a squad leader, platoon leader, company commander or what? How important are vehicles?

I should have clarified better. my intent was to leave the result rather open ended thus allowing for greater breadth of responses. I am looking to play anything from sub Platoon level up to possibly multiple companies (for a large scale game) Vehicle rules are important, as are Artillery and Close Air Support. I am not concerned with individual movement, but fireteam and squad movement should be the focus rather. Id like the rules to be flexible enough to work Modern Historical and Sci-Fi into the mix if desired. Mostly I want accuracy and realism. I am in the military and have been for 12 years. I am an avid fan of the 40K background but the inconsistencies and lack of realism in the GW rules drive me insane. I want a detailed rule system (preferably a streamlined one) that I can sue to play modern and use as stand in rules for 40k. Hope that helps.

Additional question.... which will admittedly sound stupid at first. Allow me to preface it with my only war gaming experience thus far is 40k. How well do like scale models from different manufacturers typically match up. ie: would 20mm models from company A look respectable next to 20mm models from company B while standing next to a model tank from company C? I realize that technically they should be fine, however technicalities are not necessarily reality.

Here are the FoF quick start rules: http://ambushalleygames.com/images/pdfs/fof_qs_rules.pdf
Tomorrow's War is the Sci Fi set but uses similar mechanisms. Both are pretty 'realistic' but way different from 40k.
A few of the folks who playtested and helped with both sets are veterans (myself included) and aven a couple active duty guys. Shaun, the head guy is a veteran himself. Here is an AAR I did from an Ambush Alley game I ran at a convention ( FoF is really an expanded AA): http://ambushalleygames.com/images/pdfs/soa_aa_aar1.pdf
Both games will allow you to play from a couple of squads to a very augmented platoon/company minus. Some folks use them for company+ but I think that can slow the game a little (it helps to manuever by squads vice fireteams to lessen the number of 'units' you need to deal with at that level). Both allow arty/air/vehicles. TW will allow current tech but is geared towards sci fi (more robotics, plasma guns, hover vehicles and 'stuff' like The Grid (think FBCB2/BFT on steroids). FoF covers not so distant past (post WW2) through today and into the near future, but doesn't include some of the fancier SciFi stuff.
As for figure scales, they can vary by company. I mostly use 15mm for both sets, but you'll find for TW you could use your 40k armies if you choose. Again, the AAG Forums are a wealth of knowledge and some of the folks there use 20mm. For moderns it is a good scale.
There are other rule sets out there, and frankly FoF and TW are not for everybody. You tend to love or hate them.
I hope you try them out.

They can be tough to digest if you are coming from a 40k background. Please do ask questions. I'll try to field them here if I catch them, but the AAG forums are more likely to get you quick answers.
