Subject: Anyone able to suggest a good turn based PC game?
Yeah, I've just seen Jagged alliance and it's got me on the TBS wagon again. Usually, this'd be simple: I'd just go and play Hunters on my iPad, but I don't have an iPad at the moment.
So, can anyone suggest a PC game that I can buy cheaply [or download, I suppose. But I'd prefer to buy or download legally.] that fits the role of 'Turn-based' shooting game?

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Try the x-com series, it's extremely cheap on Steam.
It's also remarkably hard and they are admittedly rather old games. But still, cheap on steam and they'er the kind of squad based turn based combat you're looking for I think.

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

Jagged Alliance. Deadly Games if you can get it to run on your machine.
gog.com has a lot of old titles tweaked to work with newer OS and sold legally for cheap. I suggest checking their catalogue. They also sell the aforementioned Fallout Tactics, by the way!

Civilization series (though I only like 5 but that's just me)
Heroes of Might and Magic series. I personally consider Heroes 3 to be the best turn based game out there, 6 and 5 are worth a look as well.
If you get a Super Nintendo and/or Gameboy Advance emulator you could try the Fire Emblem games, and Advance Wars.

Most of the Total War games are amazing, although a lot closer to Civ than Jagged alliance.
Highly recommend Medieval 2: Total War if you're looking for something cheap or Shogun 2: Total War if you want the latest one.
Battles are real time (although you can always choose to autoresolve them), but the core gameplay is turn based.
King's Bounty: Armored Princess is a nice turn based game, very similar to Heroes of Might and Magic.
Bloodbowl is turn based, although if you don't like the board game you won't like the video game. They are exactly the same.
Pox Nora is a cool FREE online turnbased game. It's available on Steam and also by itself.
Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planewalkers is a turn based card game (played exactly the same as the real life card game).
If you want to go really old school, get Shining Force 2 (on a genesis emulator). Really awesome game and still very playable.
Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Only Civ 5? Civ 5 was the only one I didn't enjoy.
Also, I specifically said not Civilization. thanks for reading the comments.

Pokemon for Gameboy Advance. Any of them, they're all good.
It's turn based.
It's squad based.
It has shooting. (Kinda?)
There, that's all the criteria met.
It's barely squad based
It does not have shooting, and you know that.

Total war isn't the kind of game I'm looking for. the fighting is still RTS.
I have played nearly 200 hours of RTW, and I have 130 hours clocked on Steam for Shogun. You do not need to tell me that it's a good choice, but it's still not the game I'm looking for.
I'll have a look at king's bounty and Magic, but I can't play Pox Nora. It doesn't startup on my PC.

Good man! Rome was the shiznit! The rest are good but gunpowder and lack of variety make the rest inferior to rome. Here's hoping the one in production is Rome!

Can't argue.
Medieval is good until about 1,500's.

Only semi-related, but just in case someone doesn't yet know, Jagged Alliance as well as Shadowrun are also in development as browser- and turn-based tactical multiplayer games. They do look quite promising, oldschool graphics and browsers go nice together.

Turn based squad shooter and its 40k to boot.
I played that back in the day. Got my hands on a torrent recently but I can't get it to work.
Bummer, what errors were you getting? Its so old at this stage its likely its not compatible with recent windows editions. Did you try running it in win 98 mode or something like that?

Yup. I'm on XP so I thought there might at least be a chance but eh.
Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?
