So, if my wolf lord on his mighty thunderwolf wielding his frost blade decides to attack a chimera, could I opt to NOT use my special weapon so that I could get the rending attacks from my thunderwolf mount? I thought I read somewhere that if you had a special weapon you had to use it. Someone has said otherwise and since I can't find where I read it was hoping someone could either point me towards or against the conclusion.

For some reason after reading that I don't see where it says I HAVE to use my Frost Blade.

A Normal and A Special weapon rules. Otherwise it is simply irrelevant.

As Kirsanth pointed out, you have a normal and a special weapon(or 2 special weapons depending on what your model is equipped with); now you go through and read the rules:

2 of the same special: all attacks use the Special, you gain a bonus attack.

1 normal and 1 special: all attacks use the Special, you might gain a bonus attack depending on the special.

2 different specials: You choose which special you use; and you never gain a bonus attack.

Since you have only told us that you have a TWM and a Frost blade we are assuming that you have a Frost blade and a normal CCW; the rules state there that you use the special weapon(it never gives you any choice, and therefore does not need to specify that you always use it since they simply state you use it).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Somewhere on that page is an important spot about 'advantages and disadvantages' of said Special weapons. It was a change from previous editions. If you have a special weapon you may never choose to turn it off, only choose 'which effect' should you have multiples. You may never choose to use the regular attack.

But does he have a normal and a special? If his 'normal' attacks cause rending, doesn't that make them 'special', ie the ability to ignore armor saves? In which case he could choose to use the second 'special', but of course, he nows falls into the category of never gaining +1 attack for using a second weapon due to the two different special weapons rule...........................

See the space wolf FAQ, you've been playing it wrong

He doesnt have another special CCW, he just has a normal CCW that, when used, GAINS from a special rule rending.

I agree with the inability to choose between the two, which is why I brought it here to Dakka. Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to choose. My friend said that the rending normal attacks counted as a special weapon. I wasn't disagreeing with anyone, just trying to find out the answer of the question.

If it was a rending weapon, he would be correct

However it is a normal CCW which gains rending through a special rule, and is never a "rending CCW"

Convoluted but works...
