I wanted to throw this out for ideas for a system of dealing with the Company HQ as you move from battle to battle. The personality of a leader can have an effect on the battle and their men. Also, as time goes on, they could get promoted and thereby lose their Company! I would be interested on thoughts. Its a straw man from a pretty novice FoW guy. Thanks.
Flames of War – Simple Campaign-style Officer effect rules.
First roll a die (1d6) for the personality of your HQ (A company is led by a Captain).
Result:
1 – unpredictable
2 – cautious
3 - competent
4 – bold
5 – ambitious
6 – inspirational
Next roll for the type of Senior Officer who will be monitoring you (Colonel or higher) on the same table.
Then check for the bonus you get in the game for your personality (applies at the start of each battle):
Battle Effect:
1 = roll randomly for the battle effect on this table (re-roll 1’s) OR after all deployment is done but before any recon, you can move any one of your own objectives up to 6inches (15cm) in any direction.
2 = can always put a platoon in reserve (or an extra one in missions with reserves)
3 = can re-roll any one of his sides dice for any reason during a battle except any Company Morale checks.
4 = can always put any one recon or combat platoon or armoured platoon on recon at the start of the battle
5 = can choose to either always have at least one unit in ambush at the start of a battle regardless of scenario OR can choose to add 4 inches (10cm) to the move into combat made by one platoon once during the battle.
6 = for any platoon he joins they can re-roll Motivation checks.
After each battle check for the reaction from your senior officer and take the modifier from the table and add it to the dice roll for the Reaction.
Note: If the leader dies then start again for the next battle.
Roll a die (1d6) and apply the following factors:
Modifiers:
+1 if:
You are both type = Inspirational
You are both type = Competent
You are both type = Bold
-1 if:
You are both type = Ambitious
You are both type = Cautious
He is Bold and you are Cautious
Other Modifiers:
-1 if you lost the battle
+2 of you won the battle 6-1
+1 of you won the battle 5-2
0 if you won the battle 4-3
Reaction:
0 or less – your card is marked – watch out!
1-5 – Acceptable – start the next battle with +1 Merit
6+ - Noticed! – start the next Battle with +2 Merits
Now roll to see if you get promoted:
Note: once you have 7 Merits you are automatically promoted without the need to roll.
Roll a 1d6 and add the modifiers:
+1 for each Merit
-1 if you are Unpredictable
-1 if you are Cautious
+1 if you are Ambitious
+1 if you are Inspirational
Optional:
-1 if in a multi-player campaign and your side is losing.
+1 if in a multi-player campaign and you side is winning.
Result:
8+ = you are promoted to a higher rank.
Optional:
0 or less = due to recent losses on your side there are vacancies that need to be filled
In both cases, start again with a new Company commander for the next game.
Otherwise, keep any Merits and carry on with the Battle Effects for the next game.
Note: after every third successful promotion roll, re-roll the type of Senior Officer to represent other ranks advancement.
Alternatively after 3 promotions have taken place, the Senior Officer will be the same type as your first-promoted leader (Captain to full Colonel).
Good luck!
