Subject: Amount of attacks in close comabt and shooting

Ok now, so i am still a noob at these rules, and still trying to get my head around them.
So my question is, how do you know how many sttacks a character gets in close combat and shooting?
Sounds stupid BUT, for example: A Kroot Shaper has the following stats
WS 4, BS 3, S 4, T 3, W 3, I 3, A 3, Ld 8.
So does he get 3 attacks during the shooting phase? with a kroot rifle? at the full 24"?
My guess is that it just goes with which ever gun they are using, like 1 shot at full, or 2 at 12"
The close combat makes more sense,
And same goes with the Krootox Rider, he has 3 attacks, so is that in close combat or in ranged?
Sorry if this is just me being stupid, but GW doesn't make things very clear...
Thanks guys

The Attacks characteristic is ONLY used in close combat, to determine number of close combat attacks. Page 37 "Number Of Attacks". An Infantry model can usually fire one weapon in the shooting phase, with the amount of shots being determined by the number listed after its type, like Heavy 2, Rapid Fire or Assault 4. If no number is listed, it is one shot only. Page 15 second paragraph and Page 27 "Weapons - Type". The rules are actually perfectly clear. It is simply a matter of getting used to how to read the rules. In essence you need to stop thinking too much. The rules tells us how the weapons are used...and that is the end of it. The rules doesn't say that the Attacks characteristic are used during shooting....so it isn't. ...

As above. Note, however certain factors can change then number of attacks you get in cc (for example having 2 ccw). Also, rapid fire weapons can shoot 1 or 2, depending on if the model moved, and distance shooting.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The A (Attacks) Stat only refers to how many attacks a model gets in close combat.
The number of attacks you get when shooting is drawn from the weapon profile of the weapon they are using.
For instance, a Gauss Cannon (basic gun on a Catacomb Barge) has a profile like this:
Range S AP
24" 5 3 Assault 2, Gauss
Where the S is the strength of the shot, AP is the armor piercing value, and Assault 2 refers to what type and how many shots the gun gets per shooting phase.
Look in the Shooting section of your BRB, it covers this pretty clearly, though it's not mentioned in the stats section, so I can see why you're confused.
Also, it is important to remember that basic rules like these are NOT covered in your army's codex for the most part, and must be referenced via your primary Rulebook.

Oh wow thanks so much!!! haha, this helps heaps, I couldn't figure out what the difference between Assault 3 and Assault 2 was.
What about if the character has 2 close combat weapons, but only 1 Attack?
Like the normal kroot, have 1 attack but the Codex says they have 2 close combat weapons, so they get 2 attacks?

Usually two close combat weapons adds one additional attack to the profile.
So a model with A4 and two CC weapons would then have A5.
Usually these attacks are already included in the unit profile if they are base wargear (i.e. you didn't pay points for them).

So a Kroot without the Kroot Rifle gets 1 attack, but with his special rifle he gets 2 attacks. Thanks guys for the responses, has helped me out HEAPS

Not sure about that, as I don't have the codex at hand. If he has a close combat weapon already, and it says the rifle is additional, then I'd say yes.
If it says replaces in the wargear section, I'd say no.

I disagree with the statement.
As a general rule the additional attack is not included in the profile.
The two exceptions to this are;
- The Attack characteristic is written with a parenthesis, like "A: 2(3)"
or
- The entry specifically states that the bonus is already included. Automatically Appended Next Post: nos wrote:So a Kroot without the Kroot Rifle gets 1 attack, but with his special rifle he gets 2 attacks. Thanks guys for the responses, has helped me out HEAPS
Also he gets an additional attack if he charges and initiates the assault.

Apologies, I forgot to say it would be mentioned that it is included.

Ah, okay then. The way in which he asked made it seem like they have to take the rifle as an option.
