Subject: Wash Pooling? Not with P3! (UPDATED WITH EXPERIMENT)

An observation really, I started using P3 paints (after being recommended by a friend) the paints are much thinner and easier to work with. I noticed that when I washed a P3 base coated mini's with GW washes, there was absolutely no pooling! This is great, no more trying to pull pools of wash off a model.
Anyone know why this is ? Or why GW Painted mini's Pool more than a P3 mini?

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

This sounds interesting, maybe it's the way the paint surface dries? Can you post pics?

Will paint a couple of test models this week, and put them up need a week or so, as I am knee deep in another project.
I will paint 2 AOBR marines one in GW paints the other in P3 and then apply the same wash with the same brush on both. I Will photograph everything.

That would be awesome - really curious about your experience with these paints. I was planning on trying out oil washes eventually because of the pooling nature of the acrylic washes but I am turned off by adding more complicated steps (cleaning, thinning, brushes etc with oils).
Looking forward to seeing your results and thanks for sharing!

Looking forward to your comparison mate. I have found GW washes to be quite good.

Not 100% sure which wash you're referring to specifically, but the P3 washes I have are more like the old GW inks, which could explain it.
The GW washes are fairly thick/viscous and will hold on to raised surfaces a little more than the purely liquid P3 washes.
There's definitely examples of the GW wash being the better choice, but I also really like the P3 series as well, especially their Armor Wash which I use exclusively on my silvers.

I thought pooling was the whole point of a wash. If it doesn't build up in recesses, then it's not a wash.

That sounds like it may be more of an ink than a wash. I am under the impression it was supposed to pool up to give depth.

No pooling occurs on flat surfaces, and gives rise to unrealistic shading on Planar surfaces. A wash would naturally shade the nooks and crevices but it shouldn't shade a flat surface unevenly.
Sorry everyone to be clear, it was GW Wash and it performed very differently. Standby for an Experiment this weekend! I will put the pictures.
EDIT....Here is the experiment setup.
I will spray both Marines Black.
I will paint one marine (A) with 2 coats of P3 colour Moldy Ochre.
I will paint one Marine (B) with 2 coats of GW Iyanden Darksun.
Leave them both for 24 hours.
I will then apply neat badab black to each in equal measure and allow to dry.
I will then photograph after 24 hours of drying.
EDIT - Almost ready for the Wash....
