Did this work recently as a commission. Love the contemptor model so I was glad to be able to paint another one. The lights are done with a central LED and fiber optic cables run to the targeting eye and search lights.

C&C welcome.

Those lights are really cool!

Very cool. How does the brightness of each point compare using fiber optics versus a countersunk LED for each? Running multiple glows off of a single, internal source is an attractive prospect. Also, how is the eye colored?

It'd really be impossible to get LEDs into each of those locations with any kind of ease. The LEDs I have just aren't anywhere near that small, and running 2 sets of wires would become tedious. It'd definitely be brighter if each point had its own LED, but I think it'd be overpoweringly bright. The multiple glows from a single source is a huge benefit in drilling as well as power source. I'm currently working on a completely lit stormraven with running lights and all. Hoping to get the entire cockpit lit using a single LED.

The eye is actually just red fiber optic cable. You can get the cables in a ton of different diameters and colors.

Ah, wasn't aware that they came in colors - I thought you might have had to tint it yourself with a colored filter or ink glaze. I'll file that away, mentally, for when I eventually (hopefully) get around to playing with model lighting.

As long as it's bright enough to be noticeable in normal lighting conditions, that's good enough. It's visible in your pictures, which were obviously taken in reasonably bright lighting, so I guess my question was somewhat pointless, to begin with. Thanks for answering, regardless.

That looks really cool, horus.

I do have a question, though - is there a reason you didn't light up the targeting sensors for the cyclone missile launcher? The pictures where the lights are turned on look a little odd without those glowing as well.

Part of it was the added complexity of running fiber optics up through the missile launcher. The parts there are fairly thin so running multiple 1.5mm cables would put strain on where the launchers connect to the main array.

The other reason is really that the missile launcher was painted separate from the main model and later attached. As this was the first time doing lighting I wasn't all that confident of attaching optics that late in the game.

Thanks for the compliments.
