Buttons Should Be Brass, Not Gold!

Last Friday nights game was 'Hells Highway' with 500 points aside. Myself and Gary decided to try the US Infantry list, and to make it even more testing we didnt take any armour... Just two M10s. We went up against Skip and Tom using the SS Panzer list.

For the first half og the game it went pretty much how Gary and me expected. With no mobile troops and not enough activations we got pummelled and by turn 3 both our OP teams were dead and half our armour was burning. To make matters worse, my Infantry platoon turned out to be dig in on a Kraut RTP shelling me to bits while Gary failed just about every radio test he had to make. For added insult, I drew three aircraft tokens in the first three turns... But sadly I had told Gary to drop the FAC from the list as 'I never draw aircraft tokens'. Given the Yanks get a 2+ for aircraft it would have been a huge bonus. Gary made sure to roll everytime just to check what I had missed out on...

So just as I was about to give up, we got a glimmer of hope. After unsuppressing all our troops we awaited the enemy barrage and fusilade of tank and infantry fire. Skip rolled the command dice and got a double 1. His re-roll wasnt much better and the Germans only had six activations and promptly failed to do anything. With this bonus in our turn I rolled a double six for activations and our army surged forward. Thomas now decided he better roll for activations and promptly managed a total of seven! Once again we scored very high and with everything in position we let rip...

By the end of the turn, every German MG Team was knocked-out, two tanks were burning and a whole clutch of things suppressed. This turn gave us the edge we needed and as the luck left the Germans, it came to use in spades for the remainder of the game. Bazooka teams knocked out MKIVs and the M10 led a charmed life and knocked out two MKIVs included the Panzer Commander. With a well placed artillery strike hitting home, our 155mm guns finally contributed to the party. And so for the second half of the game the US Infantry edged forward, hedgerow by hedgerow knocking out all in their path. Finally the Germans tipped over their morale and the game went to a US win... Despite us having spent the last four or five turns with only 5 morale points left!

Was an interesting game, with infantry facing down tanks and it was a real rollercoaster of a ride for both sides, going from what looked to be a total German win to utter defeat!

The previosu weeks game was a 700 point aside game of 'Escalation' using the new Germany '45 lists that Warwick has been working on. It was a hard encounter for the Germans up against a mass of US troops. It seemed for the first few turns that the Germans were going to get a drubbing, but a selection of poor dice, followed by the US electing to hunker down and their FAO getting fixated on one target, handed initiative to the Germans. Once the M36 Jacksons were dealt with, the Panthers steamrolled the rest of the Yankee armour and then the troops in the town were pounded.

By the end the Germans had grabbed three objectives and penned the Yanks in the town, picking off the few units that finally tried to attack. Has the US gone aggresive from the start, things would have been very different and the Germans would have had a very bad time of it...

Still a very enjoyable game, and a new favourite set of lists for a few up the club... Expect to see some Pershings soon...

Finally using 500 points and the 'Hold the Line' scenario we tested my generic Kampfgruppe Pacific lists. The Japanese were defending with the USMC attacking down the length of the table.

It was a very close run battle with first the Japanese getting the upper hand as the USMC attacked piecemeal. Then the USMC got organised and fought back as a chorent force and they gained the upper hand, only to suffer a Japanese counter-attack that almost over-ran the USMC BGHQ! With that defeated the USMC once more took the offensive untill a rash move over extended them and they suffered horrific losses at the hands of Japanese artillery fire. However the USMC managed to pull it out of the bag and their final attack caused the Japanese to withdraw.

The game ended with the Japanese on their morale value of 39 and the USMC with only 2 morale points left... The Japanese tank force was virtually wiped-out and heavy losses sustained among their infantry. The USMC force was in just as bad shape having taken losses among both their tanks and their marine platoon.

The lists seemed to work well and it certainly felt like a Pacific encounter to me observing the game.

I'm glad to see you and Warwick are working on the Pacific rules. Normandy doesn't really interest me all that much but the pacific seems rather interesting. Bonus points because I can just reuse my Ambush Valley terrain so that just a giant plus.

You said in the review that it 'played like a pacific game' Can you please explain what you ment by that? Did the armies ' look and act' like how you would picture a battle between the Imperial Japanese Army and the USMC fighting on some piece of pacific rock? With the KGPacific rules can do also do battles like Hong Kong and the bush wars in Burma?

Looks really interesting either way, can't wait to see more.
