Im just getting in to FoW.... (Been working on terrain mostly to start with) My friend and I are stil trying to pick a book to play from. He has already purchased a set of T34's... and we wuld like to know if the Fortress Europe is the most up to date "General" book out for fighting in europe with ALL the major armies....

I want to field a German army and later on a US or British army....

Will this book serve its purpose as the best all arounder?

I will work for German Late War, but is not focused on East Front. Red Bear and Grey Wolf would be better bets, but that is one book each to buy.

Yes, I would say that Fortress Europe is the best "all arounder," as you said, since it has general late war lists for all the major Nations. There are other books that specialize in more specific lists on the Eastern and Western Fronts, but you can make a perfectly perfectly fine LW list that is historical and effective from Fortress Europe. If you want to play Germans, US, British, and Russians, and only want to buy one book, Fortress Europe is the way to go.

Just as a heads up, I'm hearing rumors of a new release of 100 pages worth of lists (13 lists total) for the four major powers as part of V3. I'm not sure if it's part of the rulebook, part of the hard cover rulebook only (i.e. not free to V2 owners), or something that will be packaged seperately. But it appears that there will be updated versions of some of the generic lists for each of the major powers.

Yes. Avoid Fortress Europe, it's about to go out of print. Use the free PDFs until the new rulebook comes out or buy Grey Wolf or Earth and Steel.

I don't know that it's about to go out of print. The new lists connected to V3 are apparently going to be extremely limited in number, and there's some stuff that's still not available elsewhere (though such unavailable lists are getting rarer and rarer - the US Armored Cavalry Recon Troop comes to mind). But if you're just looking for generic "one size fits all" lists, then I'd hold off on getting Fortress Europe at least until after we find out more about the new lists I mentioned above.
