Well I have an idea that I should start a kroot army, it sounds unique, challenging and like it might be a fun project to set myself. Now it's obviously not going to be too competitive and it will probably loose me alot of games, but if it's a fun loss, like the guy at the local GW says it might be, it sounds better than a boring win like I get with my uber-lists.
So, where (or when) to start? Well, as we all know the new tau codex should come out soon, so I could wait for that and see if any big changes to the kroot or new models come in, which seems unlikely, or I could start now using conversions, carnivores and the metal models and make it fit this fan made codex from kompletely kroot: http://www.chaosfactor.org/images/5th_ed_kroot_mercenaries_army_list_by_kompletely_kroot_V5.83.pdf (don't know if the link will worlk 0.o)
What are your thoughts, wait it out or go buy now? And for any of you tau/ kroot players out their with expeiance in the field, have you any tips or tactics for me?
Thanks

It would probably get obliterated all of the time. Kroot are so fragile. I am sure you would have to do some kind of fan codex to get it to work right. Obviously the current codex will not allow it. Even if you followed the rules of the current codex you would have to use swarm tactics. I think it would be fun if you could pull it off. That would be painting a TON of Kroot though. I would not worry about the new codex. I think it would be just as restrictive as the current one on Kroot. If you think you would have fun, give it a shot; otherwise I don't think it would be competitive. lol I image half of the table covered in Kroot (because they are cheap).

Sounds fun! Should be some. Nice conversion work too. Good luck!
I would buy now too, seeing as it shouldnt change the kroot too much, or make them any worse thanthey are (not that theyre terrible, just that they probably wont be nerfed.)

Kroot are cheap now. This is before the coming tau codex update. Load up on kroot.
You can make a decent infiltrating force with kroot, the problem is their lack of armor, which means you need to stay in cover when being shot at, and since they lack grenades, you need to assault units not in cover, or assault pinned units.
Please note that the codex you linked to isn't legal unless your opponent allows it. You will in most cases have to use the current (or new) tau codex.
You can make it work. Assume an ethereal is your master shaper, take stealth suits to act as your jump infantry OR use them as vespids instead. You can make use of krootox to assume the role of battlesuits with missile pods. After that, you have kroot troops, and will have to run a single unit of fire warriors (since the codex forces you to) but then you can use broadsides as... heavy krootox? or something.

Option 1): Wait for the new Codex which is rumoured to make Xeno allies armies possible (and provide a balanced Codex -> count as Kroot models)
Option 2): Fan-made Kodex Kroot (not top tier competitiveness, but consistent with lots of conversion possibilities)
Option 3): Use the Dark Eldar Codex for a "count as kroot" army (competitive, surprisingly fitting for all less armoured fast races, interpret pain markers as "having fed"
Personally I would prefer option 3 currently. Imagine the possibilities to krootify a Raider with Kroot hanging on both sides.

Hmmm, I thought maybe I could make a tau deserter army to go with the kroot, they could be kroot sympathizers or tau vehicles stolen by the kroot. This could make the army fit with the codex (using some substitutes of coarse) and could be pretty cool. But how can I convert battlesuits and stuff to look like it's either a kroot in them or a tau that's adopted kroot customs?
Any ideas?

Yeah the closest to a legal Kroot Army codex you'll find is Chapter Approved 2004 (3rd Ed) which has a number of disadvantages off the bat right there.
If you wanted one of the updated fan codexes, there are a few of them around, some of them quite balanced and fun.
One of the better ideas for fielding an army of Kroot while still being legal and effective is to treat them as counts-as Dark Eldar.

I like the idea of DE for Kroot, but I always felt orks are better. Deffguns on lootas are enough like krootox guns, Nob sarges are similiar to shapers, shootas for kroot rifles, Nob units for shaper councils.
Then you have snikrot and commandos for the infiltrating kroot hunters, and the jump pack orks make good winged kroot.
