I've been toying with the idea of stripping my current Guard and converting them into a Renegade force. Now, I'm also thinking of starting a Chaos Space Marine army. So this got me thinking, are there any war bands or legions that frequently fight alongside Renegades? or are the Renegade forces on their own and consisted just play things for the rest of Chaos?

Also, any books that deal with Renegade force and/or Chaos Space Marines?

Word Bearers use a lot of Cultist, mind you, they are nothing but meatshields.

Alpha Legion often convert whole Guard Regiments to their cause.

Any Tzeentch or Undivided warband might have some reasons to use a renegade guard force.

There is also the Bloodpact which are essentially well trained Khorne worshiping guardsmen.

Nurgle infects guardsmen just as easily as well, though his tend to be more along the lines of "zombie" guard.

Alpha Legion and Word Bearers for sure, any of their warbands would definitely use them

Any idea on Night Lords? I'm thinking no, because they take more of a stealthy approach.

Well if you consider the Night Lord novels....

Still not really... no. They'd probably just scare them all to death

I think a lot of them would given the opportunity. If a renegade guard force was leading a revolution on a planet, a lot of chaos warbands would probably take the chance to wreak some havoc, whether they would actually "ally" with the traitor guard is a different matter or if they would just fight the same enemies. World Eaters may show up to battle the Imperium on such a world for example but they probably wouldn't care about the traitor guard much unless they got in their way.
However, remember that you can just come up with your own warband and write fluff about them yourself, making the possibilities endless.

Although the Vraksian renegades aren't strictly renegade guard forces, and more of a PDF/militia and workforce rebellion, the Siege of Vraks book trillogy is a good inspiration for how ordinary humans and many different chaos warbands can work together as a united fighting force against the imperium.
In short, the alfa legion leads the humans, and the other warbands try to inspire the fighting force to fight for their own god instead of the others.

One shouldn't forget the Iron Warriors. As masters of siege warfare they are not above using normal human soldiers.

^ very good point! After all how else would they get their siege machines closer? How else would they get the defenders to use up their ammunition? How else would they build a ramp of bodies to storm the walls???

And as said before, any warband! Just make one up! Just keep in mind the tendencies some warbands might have. Like Nurgle warbands would most likely affiliate with guardsmen afflicted with the touch of nurgle and so on and so forth

Among the well-known forces, the Black Legion, Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion make extensive use of human heretic/traitor forces.

Just about every CSM warband has normal humans on some level, even the Red Corsairs has a human militia (or at least had at the time of the Badab War...).

Biggies are Alphas and Word Bearers, but with slightly different styles. Word Bearers will send in a couple of their Dark Apostles or sorcerors and build up cultists until they can summon in tons of demons/open warp gates for waiting fleets.
Alphas will infiltrate the infrastructure to sabotage defenses and turn as many defenders to their cause as possible.

If you starting a Renegade Guard I recommend getting the FW Siege Of Vraks books which are army books that allow you to field Renegade IG with CSM.
