Can daemons of chaos take normal magic items or are they restricted to daemonic gifts from their army book?

No, so you cannot

No, they can't. All their rules say daemonic powers or whatever the exact wording is. On the plus side, they are immune from anything that negates magic items or steals powers. And their magic BRB carrier can still use said powers.

Though compared to some of the other older books, their "items" aren't nearly as over-the-top. Besides a couple stand outs.

I'd love to see Daemons and Dwarves both getting access to the common items in the BRB, but yeah, as it stands now: No common items, gifts only.

Daemons it's hard to see getting generic. Even if it would jive with 8th edition. The stuff is mostly crafted magic items. Daemons ARE magic. Moreover, they die and poof and come back again. Possessions aren't a big thing for immortals of immaterial form.

Dwarfs it makes perfect sense. They actually crafted some of the best magic items in the world.

I wouldn't! Customizing runes is a pretty sweet deal for Dwarfs. Sure, we can't get the flaming banner or get a freebie +1 to our general's leadership, but the customization possibilties more than make up for it.
