So i just thought of this and I am curious what the rest of dakka thinks. If I stuck a GK in cc with an enemy squad, and that GK had a warding stave or sword what have you, would I use my improved invul save when taking the wound from Karmazovs non scattering Orbital bombardment?

Due to the wording of Warding Stave, you get the Invuln save whenever you are in cc.

In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yes. For warding staves the only requirement is that you're in CC. DE wyches for example get their invul save against CC wounds (iirc) and so would not get it against the mad Russians portable nuke.

However Wyches don't get their invul save if they make a vehicle explode which makes this tricky.

It's not tricky. Wyches specify that they get their invul vs CC attacks. Warding Staves state that they get their save while in CC. See the difference?
