So dudes, I bought up some terrain recently that I'm planning on spraying, washing and drybrushing. However, the craters are huge, so would require at least a pot of devlan mud to cover. Are there any alternatives I could use, other than just thinning out the wash?

Perhaps I could use something similar to that used in dipping?

You could make your own wash. You could make more of it for cheaper. Here's a link to Les' wash recipes.

Make your own. Les' recipe is tried and true, for one, but you needn't even go that far. While specially formulated washes have distinct advantages, the humble layer of very watery paint isn't exactly useless.

To take Oadie's suggestion further, Get Acrylic craft paint (burnt or raw umber and black come to mind), and some Glaze Medium. Mix the Glaze 1:1 with water and add about 35% of the water/glaze mix volume of paint. You should be able to make lots of terrain wash for pretty cheap. And if your going to use Les's recipe might I suggest you use the Ultra Matte Medium as it doesnt leave any sheen after washing.

Airbrushing will get the most mileage out of washes over large areas. I airbrushed the washes on my War Hydra and Dragon models and barely used any.
