Hello, Dakka, I haven't been here for a while (my computer was too old for the forum, so it took forever to load), but I have come back to the fold.

Basically, I have been trying to plan out a way to make a Renegades and Heretics armylist quickly. I always stalled at the planning stage because it would take too much to make an army for me. (A renegade platoon is only 1 Troops choice, and only taking two Vet squads seems like a death sentence.) Well, I finally found out a way to do it thanks to Heresy-online. There were a few tutorials that helped me make the choice, the "converting CSM's to Plague Marines" "How-to Limb Mutations" and "Nurglifying a Dreadnought" really pushed me into it.

I want to take the Assault on Black Reach set, convert the Marines to Plague marines, convert the Orks into a Mutant Rabble, re-sculpt the Nob retinue into Plague ogryns, and convert the Warboss into a Spawn. That would give me everything I would need to start a small starter force for the IA7 list. The problem I have had in the past with armies is that I'll start them, but because of lack of funds/ models, I won't be able to play, and the army will sit on a shelf forever. I don't want that to happen again, and I am set on this, but I ran into a little snag.

What should I do with the Deff Koptas in the set? I was thinking that, if I'm careful, I can attach sentinel legs and use them as scout sentinels, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Any suggestions?

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

This will work in some ways but not all that you presesnt. Firstly you don't want to convert the marines in the box because it will look bad. The termies are easy to convert, the captian too. The orks are the hard part. I dont know what kind of mutant rabble your thinking but all the orks can easily become nurgle deamons with green stuff or any kind of puddy really. I say that only because I have no idea what you would use mutant rabble for if not possibly lesser deamons. I would do the same with the nobs too jus because I honestly dont think tey look anything like ogryns. Sell the deff koptas to an ork player or use them for basing imo.

Blight Drones would be the obvious choice

...and that's just given me an alternative to the rotors the BDs come with, thanks!

EDIT: Damn, the IA7 list can't take Blight Drones even though they're IN IA 7. That sucks

I'm guessing he means the style in the old the old mini-dex the AI7 list is based on. They used to have a unit called mutant rabble as well as normal chaos cultists. None of them had miniatures and most of them were converted with ork, metals and zombie parts. Later on at the dawn of APOC, they made a datasheet for the now redundant chaos/guard minidex. Here we can find pics of the minis out of the now hard to find minidex.

I do in act own the PDF of the minidex, and it has a guide to making mutants in it. A pretty nice one, too.

I would not advise you to use AOBR orks to make cultists. They only come in about four parts and are hard to convert. The warboss would be a lot more worth on ebay than converted into a spawn. My advice would be to sell all the orks and buy ork boy and zombie box sets. Or just buy vampire count ghouls if you can't be bothered converting them.

Okie Dokie, I've got some good feeback here.

@epil; Well, the Mutant Rabble are really close to Orks in the IA7 list, so I think I will go with Mutants. I like your idea for Daemons, though. I may have to try that with other Orks.

@Charax; Thanks! I didn't even think about the Blight Drone model!

@zilegil; I do mean the kind in the old mini-dex, thank you for pointing that out. The reason that I'm using the Orks is for their simplicity, just as a filler/ practice unit for sculpting tentacles/ claws/ insert other mutation here.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

AOBR marines are surprisingly convertible. A horn coming out of each helmet, extend the backpack vents to look more chaosy or just buy some chaos backpacks off a bits seller. The rest is cutting up the armour to look like cracking and putty to show putrefaction and hide things like the chest eagles.

If you want a truly cheap way to do the gasmasks use a suitable bit of twine/string, nylon preferably, drill a hole in the neck or chest and another in the face place and attach the "hose".

Orks as mutants seems obvious, just paint them flesh coloured. You could source some heads from elsewhere, even cheap armymen so long as their heads were sculpted well enough and the right size.

Happy converting.

Thanks, guys. I don't know when I'll be able to get the AoBR set, and I'll probably try and map out the purchases I want to make after that, and post here if I want any advice. Colourscheme will probably come up when I find out when I'm getting the set.
