I have just heard that SOPA comes into effect in 3 days in sweden.
What is this? well in my eyes it is an american attempt to control the internet and an unjust and horrifying act which will mean the halting of access to many websites such as youtube and possibly DakkaDakka for people like me in the UK.
now i want to know-who actualy wants it???
i say that we should try to resist it to the last-for if the internet is quashed then what will we have left?!?!
so join me my fellow Dakkanoughts in a desperate bid for the freedom of the web!!!

I thought SOPA was an American thing, why would it be going into effect in Sweden?

I guess Swedish Government is developing their own IP-Internet laws. SOPA is an American thing. We in Spain have our own pain in the ass too (Sinde).

SOPA did not get passed it is being reviewed for changes and then once that process is finished will be back up for a vote (maybe). It looks like some form of it will be passed but how draconian it will be we don't know yet.

I suspect you have heard something that was a little garbled, then. SOPA is a US bill. It has nothing to do with Sweden.
It also has nothing specifically to do with wargaming. Moving to OT.

I think the problem is that governments are too closely linked to big business and corporations; particularly the media and oil. That's where the money is and they are in their pockets. Money and various assistance goes both ways, and that's why governments will put SOPA-equivalents though in one form or another.

Removing corporations from the government is fine. However. We'll forever keep coming back to SOPA-like laws until we deal with the serious threat of piracy. Its a well-know fact that current laws are ineffective at stopping copyright theft (none of them seem to be doing anything against Russia and China, two of the biggest causes of economic loss due to copyright theft, for example.)
Especially in a time of economic turmoil, something seriously needs to be done. The only way to truly defeat SOPA is to sit down at the table and get into serious discussion (rather than just vetoing every attempt at stopping copyright theft.). Otherwise the economy is going to continue to be stung, over and over again by the money they are losing.
Every country wants to bring in these laws. Do people seriously think they can defeat them all?

That's the job of the free market, not of the government. Dealing with piracy is something that is accomplished by providing a better legal service than piracy can offer. Huffy wrote:He may be referring to ACTA?
ACTA is a rather scary thing, yeah. It's too secretive for me to trust it.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

About half of all physical games I bought didn't work, either had a scratched disk or missing disk or just refused to install. Pirated games are much more reliable.
