Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

Hallo everybody.
I have finished my vanilla Imperial guard army and now i've got the Death Korps of Krieg frenzy.
I shouldn't have bought those Forgeworld death riders ...it's too late for me now ... must ... buy ... them ...ALLLLLLL!!!!!
So i made a test buy on the FW site and the basket showed .... 1000+ pounds.
I already sold my kidney to buy IG , so now i must find some ways to lover the cost of a DkoK army.
By " Dkok army" i mean a pure FW Imperial armour siege list.
I will buy the HQ's , infantry and HWT's but maybe there is a way to avoid the uber-expensive earthshaker , thud guns and heavy mortars.
(the crew i will buy from FW)
I have found these alternatives.
EARTHSHAKER PROXY
HEAVY MORTAR PROXY
THUD GUN PROXY
These are 1/35 WW2 german artillery pieces.
They have a death korps feel to them i think.
A) Would you like to see those models in a DkoK army?
B) Do they feel right?
C) Has anybody done this before?I would like to see some pics next to FW Dkok crew to make size comparison.

They look absolutely fine, though I have no idea about the relative size.

1:35 military kits are around the right size - 1:48 is technically closer but artillery in that scale are very difficult to find.
The models above do look fairly DKoKish, but frankly so will pretty much anything WW2 or earlier, so I suggest taking a wider look around your local model store at the Tamiya, Esci, Italeiri etc kits. e.g. I've seen howitzer models which would be good gounts-as heavy mortars.

From what I remember these scale kits aren't exactly super cheap (though probably still cheaper than FW kits).

I haven't looked at FW kits in awhile, but as a 1/35 armor modeler as well I can tell you the current introduction of new kits are not cheap.
You can still get a steal on some of the older kits though. They're still relatively inexpensive. They would work great for wargaming.

You should know, a lot of those models are meant to be built, painted, and not touched, so they have a lot of tiny bits. Especially the "Earthshaker" (I built that one personally), which has 400-ish pieces.

I know I'm reviving a year-old thread but this is probably the best place to post this without starting a new one
I've got a similar project underway, not really for a Death Korps regiment but it is based on a 1:35 Kanone 18/sFh 18 kit from Trumpeter (surprisingly cheap for the level of detail, you can get 4 of these for the price of a single Earthshaker carriage)
It's still far from complete but what do you think? I've included a towing chimera for size comparison

Looks great! I was worried that real world artillery often looks undersized compared to GW stuff, because GW exaggerates gun sizes to ridiculous levels but this one looks fine.

The carriage and wheels are scaled about right, I just had to replace the whole barrel because the original gun looked more like an autocannon instead of a proper artillery piece, that's exactly where GW's models are oversized
The barrel is made out of a 8x1 Al turbing with 0,5 mm plasticard wrapped around it and around the cylindrical part of the gun breech
Now I just need to redesign the front around the added axle, it looks too empty without any sort of detail, I'm open to suggestions

Where did you find these models? They look really nice and I would be interested in them as well.

Ah! Well that explains it.
As for the front would a Basilisk blast shield fit? It's not that detailed but it might work.

Could you show the original barrel? I think that looks very appropriate.

Thanks for comments,
orz192: it's a 1:35 kit made by Trumpeter (China), either s.K 18 10,5cm Kanone (nr. 02305) or sFH 150mm Howitzer (02304) will work for this conversion, the extra wheels and axle were cast in Axson resin using a silicon mould
Kid_Kyoto: the blast shield will probably fit (or I can scratchbuild something close to the original FW earthshaker design) but the empty space between those added wheels is more of an issue, I'm working on it, stay tuned
Ifurita: Here you go, IG HWT autocannon and lascannon included for scale

I think the extra work you did on the barrel look great. It feels very much the right scale.

Couple of pics to show some progress, I've got around to base-coat my Earthshaker, it's still far away from being finished but at least it's not bare plastic and resin anymore.
Now it needs a proper crew and a huge stockpile of HE shells
Chimera and my (badly painted) cadians shown for scale, I think the artillery piece is very close in size to the forgeworld one (correct me if I'm wrong)
C&C welcome as always
