just because i havent looked into brb for this yet.. you can NOT join a Nightbringer (Monstrous Creatures ) with a unit of swarms (beasts / cavalry) Correct? the only thing that can join a Unit is HQ or some form of Royal Court Charcter .?

The only unit in the BRB that can join another unit is an Independent Character. Nightbringer isn't an IC.
Royal Courts are limited to being able to join only a few units (Warriors, Immortals, and ... Lychguard? I don't remember).

There are HQs that are not IC's, and therefore cannot join other units - being an HQ isn't an allowance to join another unit.

Good point so what a person should always look out for is the IC rule on weather or not it can join a Unit. very good.

Warriors, Immortals, Deathmarks, Lychguard iirc.

Also OP, the nightbringer no longer exists. There are only C'Tan shards, which are not even HQ choices; they're elites.\\

Furthermore, the BRB goes into some elaboration in the units section about what an IC can and cannot join.

Yes i know.. this was just a quick question / example based on unit type .. Monstrous Creatures and Beasts / Cavalry.. and that they can not join each other to form a unit.

There are also Characters that are not Independant, like Lords and Crypteks, that can join a unit as well and become part of that unit permanently. An IC can opt to join or leave a unit during game play, but once Characters are assigned, they're there to stay.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

The point is that the unit type is irrelevant. There could be an MC that is also an IC and would then be allowed to join a Beast/Cavalry unit.

In fact, I'm pretty sure nids have such a thing

Nope, no IC MCs. Tyranid Prime is an upgraded Warrior (standard Infantry) and the Parasite is an IC but not an MC.

Huh, could have sworn the prime was an MC... maybe I'm just mixing it up with another character. My friend's nid army looks all the same :/

Although not IC's Hive Tyrants (including the Swarmlord) can join a unit of Tyrant Guard, exactly as if it were an IC.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Ya, but that's the whole 'retinue' issue that I didn't want to get into

Tyrant Guard aren't Retinues though - and you only get 1KP for cracking that nut!

The only 2 ICs in the Nid book are the Prime and the Parasite. Since there isn't a model for the Parasite, your friend might have been fielding him as a Carnifex with wings or something like that... but he's not a MC. Was it a Ripper based army?

It isnt an IC, so no retinue issue

No it was the prime being proxy'd by one of the older carnifax models (the ones on the smaller bases).

And I could have sworn that tyarant guard + swarmlord was 2kp. It takes up 2 force org slots no?

Perhaps I ought to brush up on my buddy's nid codex this weekend :/

1 Org slot, and the new FAQ clarifies 1 KP.
And yeah if he was proxying with an old Fex I could see the confusion - but it's not a MC.

THat is irrelevant; it is ONE kp and ONE kp only because it is a) not a retinue and b) is a single unit. You get 1 KP per unit

I thought that the Hive Tyrant was a MC/IC. I must be wrong

Also, should I be posting a thread concerning mainly nids with the name I have?

HT's are MC, but can join TG as if it were an IC. Which is great, because then all you need is cover for at least 1-2 TG (depending how many in the unit) and the HT gets cover to.
