So I have a problem. When I paint I get a layer or two down, but I am unable to see after that, I cant imagine what I want it to look like after I am done. Any ideas on what I could look at or think on when paiting?

Do a test model and adjust accordingly, what I do.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

Another option is to find a simple photo editing software (there are several free ones online).
You can take a picture of the model and try out some rough tests just for a general idea of what you want.
This is cheaper and easier than painting/stripping a test model, but it's more of a rough draft, so you may still want to test out the actual paint on a model.
