I've been looking into starting a chaos army and I was wondering what chaos gods belong to what chaos legions.

For instance I've been trying to find what god Iron Warriors belong to and I cant seem to find it, also What god does Black legion pray to?

Some are Chaos Undivided.

Death Guard = Nurgle
Thousand Sons = Tzeentch
World Eaters = Khorne
Emperors Children = Slaanesh

on the forum. Obviously

Black Legion are Chaos Undivided. They do not pray to any single god.
However, IIRC, they are supposedly favored by ALL the chaos gods. So you would expect to find demons/ marks/ special marines dedicated to any god in the BL.

Basically, think of the BL as the chaos version of the Ultramarines. But with a better paint scheme.

Iron Warriors are one of the few legions who do not pray to any god. They are also Chaos Undivided.
Strangely enough, Perturbo is a demon prince, indicating that they do receive some favors despite their "atheism".

Lexicanum is the most useful source for this. They have a full chart of every CSM warband and which God they belong to. Though atm Lexicanum seems to be down again...

My Armies:

All of the Chaos Legions follow Chaos Undivided except the four mentioned by Thamor.

Within each of the Legions there may be elements who follow particular Gods, and as mentioned they still receive 'gifts' from the various Gods when it seems appropriate, just as a whole those Legions don't follow a specific God.

The older fluff was a little different as well, with Night Lords using alot of Raptors and close assault troops while the Alpha Legion was more stealthy...

Also, the Night Lords, as well as the Iron Warriors I believe, used to use more khorne bezerkers then other "undivided" legions. (As a small example.)

Black Legion
-They worship all of the Gods, switching from one to another depending on their allegiance. Generally they worship Chaos Undivided.
Word Bearers
-Similar to the Black Legion, they worship all of the Gods and Chaos altogether.
Night Lords
-The Night Lords are rare amongst the Traitor Legions in that they didn't turn to Chaos, though many among their ranks have been mutated or converted.
Iron Warriors
-Much like the Night Lords, the Iron Warriors don't worship Chaos. Furthermore, they try to master it and view it as just another weapon. It's unclear how well this works for them.
Alpha Legion
-The allegiance of the Alpha Legion is unclear.

Emperor's Children
-Obsessed with pleasure, drugs and excess, the Emperor's Children worship Slaanesh.
Death Guard
-The endurable Death Guard worship Nurgle, the god of strength through suffering.
Thousand Sons
-Ambition and obsession led the scholars of the Thousand Sons to the treacherous Tzeentch, Changer of Ways.
World Eaters
-Feral and insane, the World Eaters worship Khorne, the god bloodshed.

That's not quite accurate. The Night Lords follow Chaos, they just don't worship the Chaos Gods as Gods. In much the same was as many Space Marines are loyal to the Imperium without worshipping the Emperor as a God.

Their chaos cults, daemon summoning, and daemonic mutations make this less unclear.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

But the fact that, according to fluff at least, they don't do any of that themselves kind of makes it hard to tell again. They could just be trying to waste daemonic energy in unimportant battles, or they could be risking cultists lives because they think their own are too important to risk on summonings and mutations.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Oh sorry, about that.

Ever read Legion? I don't really like it's interpretation of the Alpha Legion, but it's canon.

That was ten thousand years ago.

Ever read any of the stories they've appeared in under modern times?

Exactly. One of the constant themes of the 40K setting is that nothing can use the tools of Chaos without eventually succumbing to it. Whatever the original motivations of the Alpha Legion might have been, by the 41st Milenium it's fairly clear that they are followers of Chaos.

Yeah, I have. That's why I wrote unclear. Because it's contradictory. One book says, "They're loyalists in disguise" and another says, "They're sneaky just traitors" and then a fan theory says, "ALPHARIUS IS TZEENTCH THE EMPEROR OMG ZORZ!"

The Word Bearers worship the pantheon of Chaos Undivided.

The World Eaters, Death Guard, Emperor's Children, and Thousand Sons are dedicated to Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch, respectively.

The Black Legion are basically fighting for revenge. They ally with the different gods as is convenient, and include cohorts which worship either an individual god or Chaos Undivided, but I don't believe the Legion as a whole is actually religious. They're devoted to Abbadon, not any of the Ruinous Powers, and Abbadon doesn't care about anything except getting the Emperor's head on a pike.

The Alpha Legion, Night Lords, and Iron Warriors are all essentially atheistic; they use the power of Chaos to further their own ends and conclude pacts with individual daemons as necessary, but do not worship any of the Dark Gods.
