So, I'm quite new to 40k, and have just begun building a space wolves army. I've decided to go with a fluffier army build, based around Ragnar Blackmane's great company. As such, I will be utilizing drop pods with assault kitted squads.

However, I want to use some long fangs for long range support, but I don't relish the idea of going with the standard missle spam set up...I understand it may be optimal, but I dislike the thoughtof it for casual games. My general opponents well be a couple friends who are also building first time armies (dark eldar and orks). Anyone have suggestions on other, slightly less spammy kits for long fangs against these armies, or should I just cave?

Thanks for reading, and any advice!

How about some lascannons and heavy bolters, that way the heavy bolters can take some hits to protect the expensive lascannons.

I usually throw a lascannon in my fangs just to give it the extra punch needed to drop heavy mech. It is costly though, those points could arguably turn a rhino into a razorback for a bit more. All other choices the missile launchers do better cheaper and give you the option of template or strength.

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

3 ML's-2 LC's. Use them against his armor, and split fire onto infantry. Fit's the fluff of a tank hunting squad, has frags for the boyz/spikey eldar that come out of those fragile transports, isn't "optimized"

Logan in a drop pod with MM longfangs is funny but not too serious.
This might give the balance between fluff and killing you want.

If you want a reasonably effective squad while not being spammy, than go 3xHB/2x LC. Gives you some nice anti-tank firepower, decent and cheap anti-hordes, and looks better than pure missiles.

Missile Launchers are a bargain and the go-to weapon for Long Fangs, but I agree with your reluctance on account of the originality (or there lack of).

Outside of 5 Missile Launchers, I think the following can work:

- 2x Lascannon, 2x Heavy Bolter, 1x Missile Launcher.
- 2x Plasma Cannon, 3x Missile Launcher (can potentially replace missile launcher with heavy bolters)
- 2x Lascannon, 3x Missile Launcher (can potentially replace missile launcher with Heavy Bolters)
- 5x Heavy Bolter is pretty nice; cheap and moderately effective against hordes.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

LC's are remarkably under-valued by most players.

The difference between a STR 8 and STR 9 is significant in the game of 40k. The STR/AV relationship is linear, meaning 1 point higher of STR has the same effect on 1 point higher of AV, and increased lower AVs the same amount.

What this means for you is that your LCs are as effective on AV 13 as MLs are on AV12. It also means you have significantly greater success on AV 12, 11, and 10. In fact, a hit from an LC will penetrate a rhino 2/3 of the time.

This is not to mention the value of AP2, which increases the chances of wounding MC's that have a 2+ save, or annoying models like Mephiston or Paladins.

If your looking for something different, consider LCs.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Given me plenty to consider. Leaning towards 3 ML/ 2 LC at the moment. utilize them as a tank hunter squad.

The Logan/MM squad would sound like fun, but with his extravagant cost, would have to be utilized in a higher point game...

Thanks again!
