An Eldar vehicle moves 12". It then Star Engines its way back to the original spot. I assault it. What do I need to roll to hit it?

My thought is that the Star Engine movement doesn't matter, since the "how do you hit vehicles in an assault" rules only specify whether it moved none/combat/cruising speed, but I'm not sure on this. And further complicating things is the part about it only counting total distance moved from the starting point, making me wonder if the answer is different if it moves in a straight line with both movements or if it, like in the example, returns to its original spot.

That all depends on how the Star Engines rules are worded.

can you quote it?

1. The actual movement/speed of the target vehicles is (re)determined when the attacking units assault phase rolls around (otherwise immobilized results from the enemy shooting wouldn't get a chance to get applied).

2. Only actual movement counts towards this result.

3. Having used Star Engines to move 2" back towards the starting point that you moved 4" away from means that you only moved 2" from the attacking units point of view.

They grant a second move in the shooting phase.

Here is a question... where does it say that the additional 12 inches you move happens in the shooting phase? I just see 'in lieu of shooting.' So in your movement phase, in lieu of shooting that turn, you get an additional 12 inches of movement.

Oh, maybe it says something about it in the Eldar FAQ............

Q. The Star Engines description says the vehicle may
move an extra 12" ‘in lieu of shooting’. Does this mean
that they cannot make this extra move if they are
unable to shoot for other reasons (such as being
shaken). Also, when is this move executed – in the
Movement or the Shooting phase? (p44)
A. As long as the vehicle is allowed to move that turn,
and does not shoot or embark/disembark troops, it may
use its Star Engines. This means that it can use them
when shaken, but not whilst stunned. This extra move
of up to 12" is executed during the Shooting phase.
