Happy We Found Our Primarch
|
This is my Night Lords army that has allies within it including: Previously owned Iron Warriors Vindicator (Meaning we stole from Perturabo's metal mongers ), a Chaos Lieutenant of the World Eaters followed by 12 of his warriors, some word bearer possessed. Here is the story: The exalted Captain Targaal of the Night Lords Legion was Zso Sahaal's Protege and is the last Night Lord warband leader to stay with the Night Haunter's true ideals. He leads a small warband with mixed allies. He controls the Cruiser "Fear Monger" with a limited amount of supplies depending on allies to support him. His warband is always on the search of Zso Sahaal, and will fight wars when they hear a small rumor of his whereabouts.
HQ-
-Chaos Lord Targaal with Jump Pack, Lightning Claw and combi-flamer
-Chaos Lieutenant So'Raskar with Daemon Weapon and Mark of Khorne
-Chaos Sorcerer Dorius with Warp Time and Gift of Chaos
Elites
-Terminator Atramentar with 1 Reaper Autocannon and 2 Power Fists
-Possessed with Mark of Nurgle
-Brother Dreadnaught Acrusuz with missle launcher and flamer
-Night Lords Chosen with Heavy Bolter and 2 Power Swords
Troops
-Night Lords Marines squad with Heavy Bolter and Power Fist
-12 World Eaters
-Night Lords Marine combat squad
Fast Attack
-Raptor squad with Mark of Khorne, 1 Power Fist, 1 Melta Gun and 1 Flamer
-Raptor squad with Mark of Slaanesh, 1 Power Sword and 2 melta guns
Heavy Support
-Vindicator with all upgrades except Dirge Caster
-Havoc Squad with 3 Missile Launchers and 1 Lascannon
What I want to add:
a thousand sons squad counts-as "elite sniping team" with a "force field"
Land Raider
more Raptors
8 more World Eaters
more normal Chaos Marines
More Termi's
1 Contemptor Dread
Apocalypse stuffs...
Please C&C I am open to all suggestions to alter my army

If you're going for a themed NL list, then drop the MoS,MoN, and limit the MoK a bit.
Possessed are also kinda iffy for NL fluff.
For the list:
You have 3 HQ, it's 2 max.
Drop the PF's from the termis, and give them combi-meltas. The reaper is cool, but might not be worth it over a 3rd melta shot for termicide.
If you keep the possessed, get them a rhino.
Drop the HB from the NL squad. If you're running them 10 strong; get them 2 melta/plasma guns, and a rhino either way.
Drop the ‘zerks to 8 or 9 and get a rhino for the squad.
For the 5 strong NL squad; Get a meltagun and rhino for the unit if you want them to run up and tank hunt, or stall an opposing unit, or a plasma gun for objective camping.
For the raptors get 2 of the same spc weapon. If you go dual flamers, keep the PW. This will kit them out for horde killing. If you go dual melta, keep this fist, as it lets you threaten AV in CC better then kraks.
The vindi is sweet, but all the upgrades are not worth it. Keep the havoc, and that's about it. Keep in mind that your raptors will outpace it fairly quickly; and could be stuck without support.
You havoc all have to fire at the same target, so go with either all AC or all ML, or maybe 2 and 2 AC/ML. The lone LC won't really do enough to justify the points cost.
The extra speed from the rhinos will let you support the raptors better, and make the list more resilient to small arms fire.
If you swap the vindi for a pair of AC turret preds, you’ll have some good long range AV suppression as well.
For add ons:
See above about NL theme and marks.
Basic CSM's and raptors are always a solid add on for a NL based army, as are bikes.
The raider as it is now kinda sucks.
Apoc stuff is always cool. The flyers a decent, and the NL dread is a very nice sculpt.

-BaneGuard: I don't really have a set points amount, I just want to play a relatively fluffy army.
-cricketofdeath: thanks a bunch for the advice. I will make some of the adjustments that i can and switch out a couple things. Thanks! Oh and the sorcerer is actually just there as an optional character. I will be using him as the sorcerer in the Thousand sons "Strike Team"

Unfortunately, I never read much on the night lords except a small 5 page section in the horus heresy, so fluff wise I won't be much aid.
Sorry

I haven't read blood reaver yet however from the latest books/audio and fluff around it looks like the use of raptors has been watered down so, also some influence from the dark gods has started to show on the new novels, so i think that as long as your army gets to move easily around the table any unit would fit the night lords.
I would drop the havocs, vindi and thousand sons for this reasons, and actually it's the same reason i lack those models

All I can hope for is that the new codex shows some love to the individual cults like previous editions did (i.e, 3rd edition night lords getting special rules\equipment\options).
As already stated, as long as you can move around the board fast, cause a ton of terror, and generally strike fear into the heart of your opponent, you're doing the night lords proud.
If memory serves, night lords bear the mark of chaos undivided, so don't feel too bad about putting cult marines into the mix. To keep the fluff, just make them a little more night lordy in appearance and painting\modeling. Lots of lightning and electricity effects go a long way to that end.

Yeah thanks guys, I am making my night lords use a lot of Raptors becuase in Blood Reaver, the Raptors made up most of Talos' warband near the end. The Raptors I use are converted death company and I might post a few pics later.
Aipoch: I totally agree with you on the codex. There are many fan made codexes that are better than the current one. Have you seen the new "Traitor Legion Codex"? If not send me a pm and i'll send it to you. It gives a seperate list for EVERY chaos legion. More sorcerer like units for thousand sons, more cultists for word bearers and more specialty legion upgrades
criketofdeth: the marks i use ( MoS and MoN) are actually to make the unit more effective according to fluff. Night Lords Raptors are supposedly the most ferocious and cunning ( MoS and MoK). Possessed I am repainting to word bearers as that is their fluff, and they have MoN to make them survive more and be "tougher" like the possessed guy near the end of Blood Reaver
Lord Yayula: READ BLOOD REAVER!!! best ever. the bleeding eyes raptors are epic bad asses who are actually complete donkey-caves. They talk in raptor (the bird not unit) speak. Also I use the vindicator as a sacrifice unit that looks really scary and divertes incoming fire from my Rhinos to the Vindi and dies to let all the rhinos survive and get close to the enemy. The thousand Sons "kill team" are obviously going to be mounted in a rhino for the stupid Slow and Purposful rule ...

There’s always a “reason” to include whatever you want in your army; if you want it, go for it.
Yeah, in the ADB NL books there is one possessed guy, and it pretty much shows why possession is a bad idea. I mean the NL is still trapped inside his body, and he's basically a puppet.
I know the marks are supposed to reflect some attribute from some part of the NL story, but when you drop down your list and players read over it they won't be thinking about random parts of various BL books they've read covering the NL's.
Players see "Mark of Chaos" and think Mark of Chaos, not; "Oh, homeboy raptor from X book was super fighty; that's why MoK is on that squad."
This is IMHO from reading the NL fluff since 2nd ed, and all the NL related book from BL. If you haven’t read "The Lord of the Night" pick it up, it's well worth it.
At the end it has a NL demon prince, and the dialog between the prince and the main NL character is pretty good, and goes into the mind of the Night Haunter a bit.
At the end of the day; it's your army, and you are free to run it how you want, again IMHO marks of chaos/possessed do not fit the NL theme. They never have, and won't in the near future without a substantial rewrite of the NL fluff.

criket: i totally respect your opinion and do agree. My friends fluffy TS list contained 2 squads of havocs as "superior sorcerers" and a squad of noise marines as close combat sorcerers or something. it got totally rejected by all the people. you actually had to think about the lit to understand it. but i do agree with you it is kinda hard to see the reference... but once you look at it and it is explained you see the truth in it. once again I totally aree with you and am actually switching the possessed to allied WB cuz NL are supposed to be pure gene'd so yeah... i am going to be sitting down with my list soon and modifying stuff in it very soon

Yeah, I'm not trying to hate on your list at all from a battlefield point of view, or even the fluff point of view.
I just wanted to point some things out that you could hear about your army down the road. If you hear it from me now, you won't be blindsided later by it.
My personal experience with themed armies is that they will never be as strong as a non-themed army.
So I'd rather go all in for theme, as it's not an army built to dominate the game table to start with.

Yeah. Thats the same as my experience. Themed armies just look good and effiecient armies dont look great but are amazing at slaughtering your opponent. Thanks for all the comments. I will be posting the updated list in a few days.

I'd say that Night Lords wouldn't make much use of walkers... they seem too slow. Well, apparently the Contemptor is confusingly fast, but that's beside the point. The Dread seems out of place.
Also, themes can totally work, depending on how specific or loose you are about what makes a theme. I had a really fun and thoroughly themed Lost and the Damned army that had a great record...

cadaver: The dread is actually going to be emoved... I was planning on making a custom character based off of Bjorn Fell-Handed for the War-sage Malcharion. I liked the idea of a not-insane dreadnaught as an HQ who is pretty mush a chaplain dread for NL's but yeah... a dread does seem a bit outta place...
