Right, so last night I played my first ever game of 40k at a local war games club. I was not only bursting my warhammer 40k cherry but also my table top war games cherry as I had never played anything of the sort before. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been painting GW miniatures since I was about 9 or 10 (I’m now 30) not to mention playing games like Space Hulk (first edition) Space Crusade, Hero Quest, (briefly Epic when I was 12 but it was waaaaay over my young head at the time) and more recently Dread fleet, but pitting an army against another on the battle field is completely new to me.
So, first impressions – AMAZING!
I loved every minute of it.
I took 999 points of festering Nurgle Chaos Space Marines against a rather intimidating Eldar army who out numbered my lads about 15 to 1, and won by three squads to one! I played the bloke who runs the club, and I suspect although he was going a little easy on me, that extra toughness the Nurgle mark brings really helped keep my army on top.
Anyway, for anyone who cares, thought I’d post the news up on here! I was buzzing!

Glad you had fun! Considering a lot of first game stories are "I got thrashed by a better player" it's good to hear something contrary.
My first game of 40k ever was when I was a little kid and I was basically just being told to roll dice. My first proper game had my Ultramarines standing still and missing with their lascannons for every turn of a big team game, only for it to end without me seeing combat. That was probably about 6 years ago, and I'm glad things got better!

Glad you had fun with your first game! Often they are horrible beatings that turn people off from the hobby but an early victory really helps to cement the obsession.
Good luck in future games!

I was actually convinced for a few seconds that he was actually talking about losing his virginity, despite being a wargamer. I didn't know what to say. I started at the same time as some friends, which ealy helps

I played my first game this last Saturday, and got creamed, although it was less of the guy being a jerk and more of me making tons of stupid mistakes and playing a bad list that I wrote in 5 minutes. I had to write a new list on the spot because the guy who was going to sell me a Leman Russ didnt show up, so I had to change my whole list around in about 5 minutes. Playing a list that I had cobbled together (I even forgot the 2nd troop choice, forcing me to make one squad vets out of the blue) and not knowing the game wasn't a great feeling. I lost a lot of dudes to stupid mistakes, forgot a whole turn of orders (all I had for infantry so this really screwed me) and my Lascannons didnt hit a single shot all game...
But then Marbo showed up, wiped out a squad of immortals with his demo pack and then proceeded to tie up a necron overlord all game and all was right in the world.
All that being said however, I had a blast, and I'll deffinitely have a few different lists ready before next time. Funniest part was another IG player was sitting there watching me, and when I said I wish I had had a tank he laughed and told me he would've let me borrow one if I had just asked...D'oh well, better luck next time. I will have my revenge Necrons!!!!

A game changing unit popping up like that is always fun. My first game after about a 5 year hiatus and using my new Tyranids, I tried a fast moving left hook with a flyrant and unit of Gargoyles. After getting pasted for 2 turns by Eldar support weapons, Dire Avengers (I had a whole unit of Hormagaunts Bladestormed off the table on turn 2) and being bogged down in a combat in the middle of the table by a unit of jetbikes, my left hook arrived on turn 3. Gargoyles hit and wiped out the support weapons, Hive Tyrant hit the jetbikes and killed them all in 1 turn. Then he jumped over to the weakened Dire Avengers and wiped them out. Then hopped over to the Farseer who was hampering my Zoanthropes all game and ran him through. My friends face was priceless. The first 2 turns he dominated my bugs, then my Tyrant and Gargoyles arrived and wiped everything out bar his Falcon-born Banshees. Who did nothing all game. And a lone Swooping Hawk Exarch too scared to engage.

Congrats on having a great first experience. Mine was unfortunately playing Tau against a variety of armies, getting crushed every time when I didn't know how to play them. It was hilariously bad when I charged a bunch of Kroot into Necron Warriors and got slaughtered.

My first game was 2005. I was using Tau against CSM. We didn't have rules or codexs, so we just made up stuff to fit. Needless to say, I got creamed because of some Khorne Berserkers in a Rhino, but it was still fun!

Glad you had a great first game. My first 40K game was against myself, well the first ten or so, until I understood the rules. Then I started to introduce mates into the game and we spiralled from there. Did the same with Blood Bowl, and Space Marine (epic) as it just seemed a logical thing to do as I was in a little village at the time and didn't know anyone who played, so needed to be the inspiration for others. Started a games club the following year to meet more like minded people, and from there my games rolled on and on. This was back in 1988/89 mind.

I've been playing for two years now and the first game was a lot of fun. Oh, I lost. I lost to Chaos Space Marines. Then lost to Orks and Space Marines before finally beating Eldar and Tau.
And two years on every game is just as much fun.

Thanks everyone!
I have learned today (from the bloke who runs the club, and who I played) that he didn’t go easy on me either, but wanted to chuck me in at the deep end. I spent about four ** hours putting my army list together, and I did a fair bit of research (mostly on here – thanks again) and it really paid off.
Also, over the past two or so years I’ve built up a sizable Chaos army (as I love to paint) and I always liked Plague marines, their look, their history (ditto Nurgle) which means I have about 60 of them ready painted up and buzzin’ to go…I fielded 2 squads of them, 6 in 1 squad with 2 plasma guns, seven or so in the other with a melta and flamer to get into some of the snipers he had hidden in cover. The plague marines were amazing, he only took out like two of them, and they killed two massive squads of eldar jet bikes on their own. In fairness though, his Wraithlord took down three of my 5 terminators before I finally mashed it up…those things are pretty awesome.
