I, like most people in 40k have at some point, am tempted to buy some space marines. If I do, they will be imperial fists, salamanders or red scorpions.
The thing is though, I want a space marine army, but I don't want to have a bog-standard predictable army, I want something different, something unique... but it's space marines, so everyone knows them and how to beat them.

So I ask you, can you make a unique space marine army, something genuinely different? An army that will, in a fight, give an opponent a memory of a fun game instead of a "just like the last one" memory?

In general, choosing a special character and building an army around its abilities can create an outstanding army. I chose Shrike w/ Scouts and Assault marines. You could do Kantor with lots of Sternguard, or Khan w/ Bikes. There's still a lot of variety in the spacemarine codex if you just know where to look.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

I'd just ignore it unless I had a melta to spare. At a minimum that's what, 450-500 points that only gets a couple of lascannons and a multi-melta a turn?

As for a unique list? As long as you stay away fromm Razorspam and the generic Vulkan lists, you should be fine. Chaplins, Captains, Command Squads, Whirlwinds, Thunderfire Cannons, Tactical Terminators, Vanguard Veterans, Land Raider Redeemers, and Legion of the Damned are all relatively rare units.

I should point out that lists have little to do with my enjoyment of a game. As long as the other guy is fun to play with, I'm fine.

I once fought a guy who ran a chapter that had close ties with the mechanicus. His list was led by a master of the forge, had 3 thunderfires, 2 ironclads, etc etc.
The list wasn't all that competetive, but it sure was fun (and unique) to play against.

Warmachine: 75 pts Menoth

Yeah, I've also seen "the dreadnought" list before.

Apart from this and your usual mech list, I've also seen people's lists who ran all-bikes, as well as heavy mech (more focused on land raiders and ironclads - basically no AV11), as well as drop pod lists and the more ubiquitous razorspam. I've also seen all-terminator lists before, but, to be fair, that was with a special character, and not in the C:SM proper.

So long as what you focus on are flexibility and shooting power, there are lots of ways to make good SM lists.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

horde SM list, fill all your slots with as many marines as you can, no vehicles or terminators. just Assault marines, sterngaurd, devastators and marine squads.

Tonight I'm running a list built around Pedro Kantor with two squads of Sternguard, supported by a Master of the Forge with four dreadnoughts. If things go well, I may pick up a fifth at my FLGS!

I'm also thinking of doing a fast movers list with two assault squads and two chaplains with mech Marines. Not the most competitive thing in the world, but I've had very good luck with ASM and it would be fun.

All marines look the same no matter what the paint job looks like or what you call them...

The only way to stand out as a SM player is to field kooky lists.

SM dont really have a bad unit in its codex since it the fanboi go to army of GW fanatics.

Ever seen 9 Speeders? What about 9 Attack bikes? 60 marines on foot? Put as many SM on a bike as you can? The kooky options are there.... people just seem to field what is most efficent at killing.

IE: Sternguard in a DP split fire kill 2 tanks repeat..repeat with 2 more DP blah blah blah....

If you want to play a typical SM list and be competitive.... Just paint them all bright pink to stand out.... Im 100% no in your area is fielding glow in the dark pink marines =]
