Hello Dakka!

Our next 40k throwdown is coming up in about two weeks on Saturday, February 11! We had a huge event last time with a bunch of awesome prizes; we gave out over $300 in prizes last time and if we get another big day I'll be able to prize out in a similarly impressive manner. I'm going to try and make sure to give better notice for things this year, but we all know how resolutions go!

You can check out pictures from our last event on our store's facebook page, here:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Game-Empire-Pasadena/106899122689071#!/media/set/?set=a.299525963426385.68570.106899122689071&type=3

We'll be doing another round of the same 'Ard Boyz-style, battle points-only, but I'll be breaking up the prize pool differently, so it's not strictly winner takes all (though the winner will still take most, as they should!)

Points level is 1750 for this event; I know a lot of guys are planning on going to the BAO so I figured it would be nice to mirror the points level for that event, to offer some practice games and let guys test lists, etc... I might even throw in one of those kooky new "all the missions at once" scenarios in one of the rounds!

Sportsmanship will be scored separately for purposes of the Sportsmanship award. I'm going to have a simple one-warning system for questionable behavior. If a played has a legitimate complaint levied against them for unsportsmanlike play, they'll be notated as such, and any subsequent legitimate complaints will result in the player in question being asked to leave the event.

Scenarios will again be "from the book" with some minor special rules here and there to spice things up. We will be using an 'Ard Boyz style Massacre-Major-Minor-Draw scoring setup. Don't worry though.. there won't be anything silly like Victory Points! Tiebreakers will be scenario bonus points first, followed by strength of schedule, followed by Kill Points earned during the event.

There are some basic requirements for armies. Armies must be comprised of GW models, must be comprised of a majority of models from the relevant codex, and fully assembled with all primary wargear represented on the model. WYSIWYG is the rule. I will make exceptions for conversion and 'counts-as' work if notified in advance, so I can take a look at the models in question and decide whether to allow them or not. If you're not sure about something, please let me know beforehand. You can contact me at the store, information below. The Rule of Awesomeness applies here, which is, of course, the more awesome (Jawsome?) your model is, the less likely I or your opponents are going to complain about it, so convert and counts-as competently, please!

I will be keeping strict watch of the round times during the event, and I will be walking around the tables during games to help keep people on track. Games that do not go for a minimum of four full turns will not be scored and count as a loss for both players.

The top place goes to the best Battle Points, who will take home the championship trophy and the lion's share of the prize support. The player with the highest Sportsmanship total takes home the sportsmanship prize, and the player with the best painting score takes home the painting prize. There is always at least $150 in GW product up for grabs as guaranteed prize support, with additional store credit prizes depending on attendance, and the ever popular random door prizes.

For the tournament there is a $10 entry (or $20 purchase) to play. The doors will be open early for players to come in and get set up. As usual, I want to kick this one off as close to 10:00am as possible so we don't go too long. We had 32 players last time and got the whole shebangabang wrapped by around 6pm.

The schedule will stick as closely as possible to the following:

8:30ish - 9:30 - Show up early, have donuts with Travis (B&C donuts on Alta Dena and Foothill is particularly good for those of you in a generous mood! ), talk shop, lament the sad lack of a new Tau codex/the newest FAQ nonsense/6th ed rumors
9:30am - 10:00 - check-in, sign-up, event preamble, pairings
10:00am - 12:15pm - Round 1
12:15 - 1:00 - Lunch
1:00 - 3:45 - Round 2
4:00 - 6:15 - Round 3
6:30 - Winners announced

It all goes down at Game Empire Pasadena:

1795 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, CA. 91106

Make sure you note the new address!

Please let me know here or on the tournament thread on the Game Empire forums if you're planning on attending so I can get a rough idea what to expect. You can RSVP on Game Empire's facebook as well. If you RSVP on facebook, I'll give you a free candy and soda during the event! (Just remember to ask me about it, because I will totally forget/not know that you RSVP'd by the time we're halfway through the tournament!)

If you have any comments or questions, let me know here or give a call to the store, and hopefully I'll see you there!

Random Update!

So, for those of you who didn't already hear, GW has just modified their prize support deal, so instead of getting prize support at a standard amount for each event, we are now getting an annual prize support amount which we are able to dole out at our discretion.

Probably pretty boring information, but it does mean that I have a lot more flexibility to adjust the prize support for a given event depending on turnout.

Back to your regularly scheduled ranting.

Does that equate to generally more, generally less, or about the same? I'm guessing generally less since that's how GW rolls.

Support goes down, model price goes up. More for GW, less for us peons!

Works out to the same as far as amounts go, just modified how I can use it. A rare case of GW making a change that did not reduce value and instead increased versatility.

That being said, it's the same amount of prize support we've been getting for like the last five years, so on the whole the value has gone down factoring for increased model cost. Such is life. With GW I'll take a "not directly negative" move any day!

Ok, that's cool then. I would just hate for GW to be boning stores for no reason. Again.

Out of curiosity, is it going to be BAO mission all day?

we are under way now, total turnout was 19.

The field is again, reasonably diverse this time:

Dark Angels x3
Necrons
Imperial Guard x3
Grey Knights x3
Dark Eldar
Chaos Space Marines x2
Blood Angels x2
Orks x2
Space Marines
Tyranids

Duplication on the more popular tournament stuff, no Eldar, Tau, Daemons, or Sisters.

First round mission is a modified Seize Ground with Spearhead deployment, then we're doing the BAO multi-mission with Pitched Battle deployment, then a modified Annihilation, Dawn of War deployment.

Results to follow.

So what happened? Who won?

Andy won overall. He shifted gears from the GK he's been using to his IG army we saw last year, and continued his recent dominance. Grimgob took the painting prize with the Battlewagon Blitzkrieg, and Ken took the sportsmanship award with his indomitably good attitude.

Poor Derek was within two points of both the overall and painting prizes, and it was kind of a bummer for him to miss out on both since it was his last hurrah with the egyptian Deathwing, but the numbers on the spreadsheet cannot be denied! He got a Commissar Yarrick as a door prize, who I expect may become a preacher or something in his upcoming SoB army. Or might end up gathering dust in a drawer until he can trade it away. Such is the life of a door prize!

Pics of the day and the winners can be found on the GE Pasadena facebook gallery:

All in all, another good tournament day, thanks to everyone who came out and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

I have a feeling Andy's dominance will be coming to an end.

Dang sounds like it was a great event. Next time I may stop by with my Eldar, this weekend I was at a church retreat so I was otherwise occupied! How did everyone feel about the BAO missions? I've played a few test games and I think they make the games a lot closer and more tactical.

Jesus Christ changed my life, He can do the same for you!
