Hello,

I have a friend, who is a great painter, doing commission work on two of my HQs: Coteaz and an inquisitor that I converted myself. I provided the models and will be basing them myself; he is just painting them.

My question is this: What are usual commission prices regardless of personal affiliation? I've heard some do the price of the model; others have an almost random set price. My friend doesn't normally do commissions and therefore doesn't really have a set price. He said to pay him what I think it's worth as I've helped him with some stuff in the past so it's kind of like a favor. However, after seeing his work it's almost like a work of art so I have no idea; to me/compared to my abilities it's worth a good deal of money but frankly I know it wasn't too hard for him.

I'm basically trying to figure out what I can pay him that wouldn't feel patronizing yet wouldn't screw him or my wallet over at the same time. Again, he did an amazing job, so I don't feel comfortable paying him something like 20$ for the both of them, but maybe that's the going rate for models I've provided and since he didn't have to base. Any suggestions?

it really depends on their skill level. if they are infantry and not a golden deamon paintjob . ask him how many hours it took him. that would also give you a good bearing on what you should pay him.

standard negotiation will help.

ask him what he feels would be appropriate for the time spent, negotiate over average prices for commissions of models of similar quality, identify if there is any room for friendly discount due to your relationship (this shoudlnt be over bearing)

Pricing in these situations comes down to agreeing on a happy medium between two consenting parties. You would need to provide us with alot more information to be able to make the decision for you. Whereas with discussion over quality/time/happiness/relationship and average wage for such work Im sure you can come to a fast agreement. If he paints slowly and casually infront of the TV this needs to be considered when discussing "time spent painting"

Just take an average hourly salary for a skilled job in your area as a basis.

End goal. you both need to be happy

Maybe if you have some spare models he may have use for, offer him those instead. If he loves the hobby then he'd probably be up for that more than a high five and some cash, considering you guys are friends. You can also let him beat you the next few times you guys play against each other

It's hard to say what his painting would be worth though, without seeing examples. Some people charge $5 for HQ's, some may charge in the hundreds if it's Golden Daemon quality.

I consider 10 to be suitable for slightly better than table-top (ie, extreme highlighting, washing, , but no OSL, wetblending, etc), although depending on the model, I would go up to twenty.

Depends though. I tended to do commissions on a dirt cheap basis, and most people charge more than that and aren't willing to do such cheap work.
