I was thinking of doing the Beastmen but I had a few questions.

1) Are Beastmen a fun army to play.
2) Are Beastmen forgivable when you make make mistakes.
3) Are they effective.

I am just starting Warhammer Fantasy and I thought the Beastmen looked really cool but I need some input on the Beastmen before I spent money on the them.

1. YES!
2. They have a learning curve but once you get it down they become forgiving
3. I have consistently come in the top 10 in my local tournament out of 35+ players and more recently have been barking at the top 5

They are considered to be under powered by a lot of people, and not really a beginner army however to answer your questions:

1. They are really fun, the main appeal is not the ambush, although it does were well with small units of ungor raiders and maybe a 20ish man gor unit. The main thing with beastmen is the primal fury. At the beginning of every combat you do a leadership test if you pass you reroll misses, if you pass on double 1s you get to reroll misses and get frenzy (an extra attack). With Ld10 and a BSB nearby for rerolls you will fail this test less then 5% of the time.

2. Like I said they are tricky for beginners but a hard army really makes you a better player. If you play 40k you know there are top tier armies and builds, fantasy is a lot more balanced.

3. As stated above they can be with the right builds, i suggest you check out the herdstone for better tactic and lists builds: http://z2.invisionfree.com/herdstone/index.php?act=idx

Play what you like the look of, and beastmen are a beautiful army, they have strong combat and magic phase, they do lack shooting however, though after some games you'll have grand stories of an ungor raider shot finishing off a big monster. Check the Herdstone and do try out the True Children of Chaos.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

1. Beastmen, hell all armies really, can be fun. Beastmen playstyle in particular will suit you if you like magic buffs/debuffs, Ambushing, and hordes of Gors/Bestigors

2. When you first start out, Beastmen will be a tad unforgiving. Rookie mistakes can be exploited by wily opponents. However, as you begin to learn the army, the obvious mistakes become avoidable, and you can have room to make little mistakes.

3. Depending on how you build your army, yes. Maybe not top-tier, but definitely good.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Good luck in getting one to lie still while you do him..haha..

Seriously though, I play a Timurkhan list with a few Beast units scattered in it, and they are very nice models and they perform very well...

Good luck with them!

Just don't take the monsters....

Herdstone Shard spam is a great way to play, I've seen the minobus do really well in tournaments too.

Doombulls on the Flying carpet w/ gw and 4+ ward can do wonders
