I have a couple of painted armies but my terrain has always been of the disposable variety. That being said my most enjoyable game experiences have been on very nice gameboards at conventions or somesuch. As I get older I find I'm wanting better terrain to fight on. In fact the terrain is almost more important than the armies now. I think a plain just basecoated army looks great on awesome terrain but a really good golden daemon army doesn't look so good on a grass mat hiding behind a box of cornflakes spraypainted.
So what's your preference dakka? Would you rather spend your valuable time highlighting your miniatures until you want a boltgun in the face or put in the necessary time to build and paint a kick ass board?

How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?

Good cheap boards can take at max a day (with drying time two). I have made 5 boards and all of them looked pretty good.

I also do most of the terrain in our group so... meh. I do both.

Terrain is quicker to do than a unit, but i am a bit of a stickler for detail on both counts, and put equal value on both. My terrain matches my armies. It makes for great games.

Work to the best of my ability on my minis.
If I ever feel like a change, work on some terrain, the only trouble is storing the good sets like the lava board (although the acrylic caulking seems good for acid river set pieces), but if you have it detailed enough content wise (albeit doing much more LoS checks more thoroughly) then I find it can feel just as good with a 'battlemat' (like the tyranid spires made out of hot glue and cardboard but they look magnificent.

I recently bought/painted a GW plastic table with the scenery paint bundle. It took I think something like 3 hours tops, over 3 days.
1 hour to basecoat in brown.
1 hour to highlight in ocre.
1 hour to glue some grass on it.
Considering I take something like 3/5 hours to paint a single model (still 1k points og GK and 2k of CSM to go through, I'll let you do the math), I think I invested my time carefully with the board.
I'd say go for a board, easy painting and very good looking with minimal efforts.
