So I've been playing more DoW2 lately and I realized.....I kind of suck at it

I usually play Chaos, but no matter what I always get bogged down by Lootas/devestators and such, and I never EVER have enough power to do anything.

So....any tips for a DoW2 noob

I would have more help for you if I could even finish a normal MP game, I still don't know how to open the port I need to on my router.

How does one open ports on your router?

"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. Enjoy tentacle-rape, Kirk, we know Sulu will." -Terminus

"This great fortress was a gift to the Blood Ravens from the legendary Imperial Fists. When asked about it Chapter Master Pugh was reported to say: "THEY TOOK WHAT!?""

It's all in the hotkeys. Either bind them yourself or use the auto-assign option thats maps most abilities to "Q", "E", and "R".

Even if it'll cost you some games force yourself to play using hotkeys (especially retreat which is bound to "X") as much as possible. If you master them keys you'll be able to react faster and play better.

Another big thing is don't hunker down for too long. Unless you're gonna lay a trap you should be moving around the map, capturing points, harassing power gens, and so on. This is not the kind of RTS where you build up an army then have a huge battle with a full pop cap. Always be on the offensive whether its grabbing territory or engaging in skirmishes.

Lastly have a build order in mind before every match, but be prepared to adapt.

P.S. always watch replays!

I'm no computer expert but if you go to your Control Panel under Security there's an option to let programs through your Firewall. That might help.

The only hot-keys I have down right now are retreat and selecting your base. oh, and "B" for when I use the grenade launcher heretics. I love that barrage ability

Are you assigning squads and buildings to command groups? eg. ctrl 1, ctrl 2, etc.

I tend to have combat units on 1-3, some builders on 4 and 5, then my production buildings on 6-10..

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

Oh God you're right I am. It's still worth putting squads on command groups in DoW 2 though iirc.

one note

if you fall behind in DOW2 you really need to outplay the other person, its very easy to lose a few guys, and have the opponent press the advantage for most of the game, unless you pull a cat out fo your hat, you are going to suffer a long, slow death.

as chaos, I'm pretty terrible, but running sorcerer I had one game where I caught an enemies entire army capturing a point with heavy weapons and bolter marines hidden by a tzench tower, cut down like 3 squads of guardsmen and misc support in like 15 seconds, besides that, yeah, i'm terrible

you can have your cultists build towers, depending on your leader

the khorne one randomly summons bloodletters
the tzeench one cloaks nearby guys and shoots sometimes (iirc)
the nurgle one heals nearby guys

really if you can have guys holding a shrine and the worshippers aren't getting shot, it is a significant advantage

Oh, I always thought it was the khorne tower

1. Heretics with barrage and the rushing them with your lord under worship works very well
2. Get Bloodletters and teleport in
3. Get the armour that gives you that fireball attack and then watch them burn
4. Always be offensive

Why would you want that? Dark Crusade is pretty mediocre.

DoW2, however, is awesome.

They play differently, both are good. Trying to argue which is best is silly.

There's no competition. In DC you command a huge army bringing iron-clad death to the enemies/friends of the Imperium. In DOW2 you just hide behind rocks and wait for your opponants to leave weapons lying around. Space Marines are veterans of centuries of warfare, surely at some point it would have occurred to them to pick up better weapons before?
Just look at this gak

Tell me that doesn't make you want to grab a chainsword and charge into the fray.

I enjoyed both games, Dark Crusade being the best expansion for DoW1. But they both have ups and downs, and lets leave this thread to tactics. If you want to talk about Dark Crusade, why don't you post some DC tactics, I play Chaos in that as well.

It was better than Dark Crusade at least.

If your favourite army is included in it then you're going to like it more, obviously. I actually quite liked SOB in SS, it's just a shame the campaign map was gakky.

I didn't like the useless addition of flyers in SS. I would have preferred some units that were actually useful.

I find wehn I am playing as SM and I am using the Apotecrian, that the most effective build is the following.
1 TAc squad

Then drop a power node and two generators

ASM
The first armour upgrade for the Apotecrian

T2
Tac squad
Dreadnaugth
Give tac squad and ASM sergeants and weapon upgrades

Also always be on the offensive, this is most definitly true with the SM. Because you simply cant afford to be defensive, make the enemy suffer req bleed and gen bash when you can

actually, if you want to have an indepth, tactical squad based game, you play dow2, if you want to play what basically amounts to starcraft with 40k themed units, you play DOW1

not that dow1 wasn't a decent game, it just appeals to the lowest common denominator more than a game that casualty control, flanking and cover does.

Why can't people accept both games are good and both play differently.

If you think DOW2 is tactical you have a subnormal IQ. Acting in accordance to a very simple algorithm is not tactics.
If you want a tactical game I suggest Hearts of Iron 3 or Darkest Hour.

Let's cool down people, and not start a flame war (I'm looking at you Joey) about a video game.

Also bombboy, if you want I'll play with you a bit. I'm not that great either, I usually end up leaving a unit idle too long is my problem.
