I played my first 5th ed game tonight. It was a bit of a learning curve.

First turn, I've got an assault squad and a sang priest running like hell for the other corner. The sang priest was at the back of the pack, about an inch behind the pack. Opponent's turn, their vendetta shoots its lascannons over the squad and snipes the sang priest. The reasoning was that he wasn't an IC and could be picked out like that. I got cover saves but I couldn't make three in a row. As it turned out, I didn't need that FnP anyway but it sure would have been nice.

Did we do this correctly?

Sang Priests are IC

Was he not part of the assault squad?

Also FNP is useless against lascannons

If this is true, then:

Cannot have happened. And this:

May the direct opposite of how the rules work. First of all, he is an IC, but if he wasn't, then there would be no way to pick him out. Secondly, since he is an IC and he was within 2" of your squad (he was this way in the movement phase right?), then they couldn't have picked him out either.

The only way your opponent could have picked out your SP is if he was all alone, outside of 2" of a friendly unit.

I suspected some shenanigans here. Did I mention that the opposing list for this 500 point game was actually 720 points? I didn't think to add it up before we started...I mean, who does that? So that's a few lessons that I learned tonight: no sniping sang priests out of a squad, and bring a damned calculator to games from now on.

Calculators are your friend.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

In earlier editions of the game you could "snipe" models by making sure they were the only ones of the squad visible to you, but no longer.

Unless you're playing against a Space Marine list fielding Telion or a Grey Knight list fielding Vindicares then no, you cannot snipe a model out of a squad.

Edit: Guess I should include Jaws here, technically.

Seconded. I just realised all those 1500 point games I was playing?
I only had 1259 points. And I still have a 3-1 win ratio.

On-topic, pretty much what everyone else said. ICs can only be singled out in CC, not with shooting.

2000 points. Win:23 Draw:3 Lost:3

Back after hiatus. I'll see you around!
