Subject: Maugan Ra in other squads

Hi guys,
I've been working on a couple of lists for my Eldar army and I've encountered a conundrum; I'm wanting to run Maugan Ra in a unit more suited to his strengths (a ridiculously shooty assault weapon and a nasty amount of high-strength close combat attacks) and was wondering if it was worth putting him in a Harlequin squad (with Shadowseer, of course, and probably a Death Jester)... I know that he'll force them to lose their ignore terrain rule... do the benefits outweigh the detriments? Or would he be more suited to a unit like Pathfinders?

I've seen my friend use this same tactic with some good results. He used them mainly as a short range shooting squad, the short range of him and the death jester are not a big problem due to the shadowseer, pretty much only things that can see them they are already shooting up.
And they're still a good close combat beast to finish somebody off, or even act as a deterrent for the enemy. I've seen assault marines jump around them to try and get at the rest of his army, just to get caught anyway due to their fleet.
Power unit for a waac list they are not. But a fun way to use an awesome model that can be effective is all you need.

Think it makes for a potent unit with harlies as you described; 8 x s6 shots, 5 rending, lots of high initiative attacks. Hang around at mid range and annoy people with vot, or split up and charge juicy targets with the fleet, ignore terrain etc. I've had no joy with rangers, too easy to kill and not enough damage output.

Cool. I may have to consider running this combination next time I play (I need to get the rest of the Harlies, I only have a seer and a jester, but my local store is cool with proxies). I've got a couple of lists to try out, but I have always had a soft spot for Maugan Ra.

While it is possible to run him in a squad of harlequins...it isn't advisable since he loses his Fearless status. The best unit I've seen him attached to is a 10 man wraithguard unit. It allows him to keep his Fearless status, and usually you have Eldrad, or a basic seer attached to the unit as well. It makes quite the durable brick that also scores.

True that he loses fearless, but they would stand a good chance in assault with anything short of a deathstar, and can avoid enough shooting with vot to usually not have to worry bout 25% tests.

Yeah, but in turn..the Harlequins lose Hit and Run...which is a big deal. VoT is nice, but most armies have extreme ways of moving units quickly now to close the range needed to engage Harlequins. I'd rather have him buried in a unit that is hard as hell to kill and can't be pinned or fall back, then use the Harlequins for other jobs. If you want to pair a character with Harlequins...Yriel is a better choice..the Harlies still lose Hit and Run, but Yriel can deal more damage consistently in CC vs. a wider range of threats.

True, when I saw this tactic in action it was the forward vanguard of a footdar list so the avatar meant it didn't even come up.

I've used Maugan Ra with a unit of pathfinders. They're really annoying to everybody.
With his rending and their ranger rifles, they put consistent annoying wounds on infantry in the open and MCs. You can't shoot them out with the 2+ cover saves, and his Ld10 tends to make them stick. Then if you get close, he just leaves the unit and assaults on his own (or defends the unit if they're assaulted).
But it is like 300 points, and he does still lose fearless.

Maugan Ra is a beatstick, one of the best PL's. You can stick her to Harlies, Dark Reapers, and Pathfinders - in this order. She's probably better used in an assault based unit since she's mean in cc.

I do like Muegan Ra best with Harlies myself, but then I am very fond of Harlies and I always try to not leave home without them.... Stick a farseer in with them to with Fortune and doom and watch opponents fall. If I run muegan with harlies I will run Death Jester too, but otherwise I do not run Death Jesters as I would rather just assault things with my harlies and the Death Jester can have a Kiss. I think that with Dark Reapers his short range weapon is not that great unless you want him to help protect your rear. I think pathfinders are great with him, maybe even better than dark reapers as they really need CC protection and they can hold objectives. Cheers
