I'm pretty new to lists, but this one I think would be pretty fun. I don't see it winning everytime but it's quick, lots of firepower and would be effective against necrons/SM/chaos ect.

HQ: Command squad, 2x plasma rifles, medic, vox, carapace armor, krak grenades, 2x bodyguards (commander): plasma pistol, power sword, melta bomb and boltgun.
-197 points (Not sure if you can have 3 weapons on your commander, but if not, I'd take out the boltgun, thats mostly fluff anyway.)

Troopers: two vet squads, each with 3x plasma rifles, plasma pistol, vox, carapace armor and demolitions.
-380 points total

Fast attack: 3x Vendetta's each with heavy bolters.
-420 points

Total: 997 points

I know it lacks against hordes, but against smaller more powerful armies, I find it effective. The Vendetta's can take out most tanks, the command squad is meant to be able to survive and give orders well being able to dish out alot of damage, the two vet squads are effective against space marines or tanks and even more effecive when they receice their orders.

I'm open to suggestions and I'm curious to see what people think.

Note: I am not a Guard player. I'm just seriously considering playing them, either as a Armored Fist or AeroCav army, and have been giving things a lot of thought.

I think your CCS is fat. I've never been a fan of Medics in a 5 man squad, the Vox does nothing until you disembark, the Boltgun prevents you from assaulting, and there aren't enough special weapons. You have 4 guys with BS4 that can load up, I'd so do it. I'd also consider droping the Bodyguards for an Astropath instead. The flexibility it offers you is nice.

The Troops themselves, you may want to bring some Meltaguns. You can get in Melta range guranteed and most armies will have something in armor that you need to take out if you have any hope to survive the next turn. I'd consider dropping the Plasma for higher point games and load up on Melta.

I'm not sold on the Carapace armor. I love the idea fluff wise, but I'm not convinced its worthwhile in the long run. There are so many AP4 weapons on the field these days (Heavy Bolters, Heavy Flamers, Autocannons, Meltaguns, Plasma weapons, Lascannons) that its not as good a buy for 30 points as you might think initially. Definitely keep the Demolitions.

At 1000 points how much anti-armor do you need? I'd switch out 2 Vendettas for Valkyries with Multiple Rocket Pods and Heavy Bolters. Then you have your anti-horde and you'd still have a fair amount of anti-tank.

Agreed on CCS, I see what you mean. Though with the plasma pistol AND the boltgun, you can assault with the plasma, just as Stormtroopers carry bother pistol and rifle which allows them to assault and fire using the pistol.

Agreed on the armor, but being as there is so few squads, giving them every chance to survive is pretty important. As for the melta guns, I'm not a fan of rushing out there with loads of meltas. Effective? Yes. A fan? No. People get pretty angry about that. With demolitions (as long as you don't blow yourself up) and the vendettas, there should be enough anti-armour. Though loading the command squad with melta's and a plasma pistol might help.

Now swapping vendettas for valkys, thats a great idea!

Thanks for the ideas!

For some reason it didn't click that the Bolter was on the same guy as the Plasma Pistol, even though you clearly said it was and remembering the Codex would pretty much have to be.

Good luck!

*Edit*

An alternet version with suggestions.

HQ: CCS: 4x plasma rifles, plasma pistol.

Troops: 2x vet squads, 3 plasma rifles, plasma pistol, demolitions.

Fast: 2 Vendettas with heavy bolters, 2 valkyrie with rockets and heavy bolter.

One of the Valks will mount the command squad and the vets in the Vendettas. I dropped the voxs and heavy armor for another Valk for pure anti-infantry work.
