So I like the idea of an entirely WYSIWYG army, but as you can imagine, just like everyone else, I hate being stuck because of glue, so I magnetize. So I bought a set of 1/8x1/16" and 1/16x1/32" magnets, and went to town.
Turns out, this worked awesome for my AoBR marines (while not being very useful because well... they're AoBR marines) and is working on my 'Nids... kinda.
I started off with my 'Nid warriors, and did all the stuff on the original sprue. So my Scything talons, heads (because I'm weird like that), and deathspitters (I think?) are magnetized to the unit. Now obviously, this will work for devourers or spinefists, as they're both smaller, and rending hands as well, but as it is slightly noticeable with the deathspitter, I'm nearly maxing out the strength of the magnets, as the deathspitters tend to sag slowly. This is using the 1/16x1/32" magnets. The other magnets are... much larger, and therefore not suitable, and so it got me wondering - What on earth will I use to try to get the heavy weapons magnetized?
This is where I break down into theory:
Should I use a larger magnet in the heavy weapon arm? Will the force exerted by the arm on the body hold it, or just aggravate the problem?
Will any magnet size stop the dropping arm, due to it being so awfully long?
Is there a better magnet I could use in the body to exert a stronger force?

I've tried looking for 16x16'th inch magnets, but they seem to be rarer and twice the price of my 8thx16ths, which seems wrong. I've also seen tales of 2mmx1mm magnets, which if I'm doing my math right is .079x039", slightly larger than the .0625x.03125" magnets, and should be a bit stronger, if I'm correct about how magnets work. Question is, would it be strong enough, and where would I get them in America? They seem to be creatures of legend over here, and I'm not paying import shipping on $20 of magnets.

Does anyone have a solution for me?

The problem I figure is an issue is that the magnets are smooth. For the heavier weapons, I might try either notching the magnet somehow (so that it can slip only so far) or try a shaped hole to fit a specific shaped rod (square rod on arm, and a square shaped hole in the torso, ya know?)

Another idea is to just use larger magnets on the torso, and put your smaller magnets in the arms. Larger magnet would have a stronger magnetic pull.

Good luck.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

What I tend to do when magnets wont cut it is pin it. Just drill out where the piece is going an shove a paper clip in it but only glue the end that sticks into the piece of swappable wargear. The only issue with doing this is that all wargear options that use the socket on the model will have to be pinned in this way. I used this method for the sponsoons on my landraider and it works very well.

N35, 3mm x 1.5mm
100 for $3.00

I got 500 with s/h for less than $20. Don't ebay them, you're getting ripped off.

I use them on space marine arms. Sometimes I don't want that Sgt to have a power sword...

I sink the magnets into the torso by drilling it out until the magnet can sit flush with the arm area.
In the shoulder I drill out using the same process. Make sure the holes align. The magnets will align up perfectly, even if you don't want them to.

In the arm I make sure the magnet is aligned properly by putting it next to the torso one, with my xacto knife inbetween.
I then add glue to the arm hole I drilled out for the magnet. Put the arm onto the magnet. I use the hobby knife to hold the magnet in while I move the arm away from torso.
Once the glue dries the N35 strength is enough to hold a Metal SM arm in any posed position.
If you're thinking large model I would look at a bigger magnet or stronger one.
Make sure you don't have magnets glued into place that polarize from each other, that's bad...

Look around their website you should be able to find some decent size (and strength) magnets on there.
