Can the great beast of Gorgoroth support a troll in combat? What with the spear and the larger base size.

No.
Check the 'spear' entry on p42 and note that it says "warrior on foot" for supporting.

Well, I think a Troll could support Sauron. Both are models on foot and Sauron has the smaller base.
