I'd love to make a Greek-themed army, modeled on the Ancient Greek culture/language.
I reckon my best bet would be Space Marines-they'd lend themselves well to an Athenian blue, and with nice big shoulder pads you could have Greek letters denoting squads (squad α, squad β, etc).
You could have vehicles with names like Όλυμπος, Ἀϝίδης and Ἀλέξανδρος, and truely Homeric (Ὅμηρικ) heroes.
I know there's that site that does the Spartan Headdresses, so I could use them for veterans, I'm not sure about for normal troops. Some Corinthian helmets for 40k would be sweet. Oh actually these, hot DAMN.
What do people think about style/composition?

Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?

I think its a great idea. I think the Ultras are more Roman than Greek, a good example of a Greek-themed chapter would be Iron Snakes. The're from the planet Ithaka and they have squad names like Damocles, Veii, Ridates, etc. Their book also has them fighting with long lances which I guess is a reference to Greek phalanx formations.

Scribor miniatures has some nice Greek looking shields and guys. They might be worth a look at, especially special characters

Imo, Spartan in particular would be the best theme to go. Close Combat Terminators with Shields are your friend.

They are badass, but they're also about €20 each. This is what they look like to anyone interested:

My δεμος would never stoop to such barbarity as hand to hand combat. I want a rigid, disciplined gunline.

Sounds like those Iron Snakes space marine chapter. I also think the Sanguinary Guard look kind of greek.

My guard army has a greek theme, from the olive skin and shaggy eyebrows to the fact that they write in ancient greek (or Foleran Gothic, as I call it):

Of course, this would be much more of a modern greek-style army, than a hoplite army. If that's what you're going for, I'd say space marines for sure. I made up a spartain assault marine for someone once. I'll take pictures of it when I get back from work.

The Black Guard Chapter appear to be a Greco-Romano inspired Chapter - their badge is of the stereotypical 'Hoplite' helm whilst their Forge Master was named Germanicus (amusing link about the -real- Germanicus). He kicked in a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Kraken.

This is the only example I can find of their badge;

For a little more info (but not much)

(Just throwing this out there as an idea/inspiration for you)

You could use blood angel stuff as a base and then use scribor heads along with the tactical squads you buy. Just simple head swaps.

I hadn't really considered skin colour. I suppose I'd just give them a bit more ogryn flesh to make them look more tanned. The ones you have, though beautifully painted, look black to me rather than Mediteranian. I heard somewhere that the Greeks, being dark skinned, regarded the pale Persians as inferior. It certainly seems looking at historical sources that they were much darker than Europeans, so yeah I probably shouldn't use Elf Flesh.

I prefer my own chapter, based on a liberal 21st century view of the Ancient Athenians. Free warrior-philosophers crushing xenos and expanding the Empire of Mankind through brute force, then founding αποικία and setting off to conquer more in the name of Μεγάλη Τερρα.

I think there is a site that has greek style helmets. I would think a crimson fist "stubborn" with sternguard fits your pattern of a gunline wall that you are looking or.
