You're in your first year, so technically you're still in the "honeymoon phase" which can be the toughest phase of things. Once your body gets used to the "external regulation" (whether you are insulin dependent or food), things really calm down and level out.
My younger brother had Type 1 from the age of 6, till he died at 19. Really, it didn't effect his life all that much, aside from the periodic blood checks.He was in the marching band in high school, bowled in leagues, tennis..he was ridiculously active to say the least.
I have seen (at least in the US) some people are thoroughly weirded out by a person taking care of Diabetic issues (like insulin shots, or blood sugar tests), but after a while, you really don't notice it.
