I'm in the same boat, just started orks (my daughters army, my financing). A good option is always more boyz.

You already have the codex I assume? I started out w/o one (just used the AOBR pamphlet). Then when I broke down and got the codex, i found it to be well worth the investment. So much good stuff in there.
I'd recommend a unit of Nobz (PKs and Kombis are good choices) . I just got a small unit of Deffkoptas and I quite like them. I have only 1 Killa Kan but so far, he has blown up my friend's Dreadnought more times than the other way around!

It depends on what you want to do, what point size you normally play at, and if you want to play in tournaments. We need more info.

I'm not sure about game play but, I did get some killa kans in a trade for my daughters orks, and man, those are fun models to paint. I bet they are even more fun to put together.

well, if you look at the numbers:
(here is where you go to your Orks Codex and look up the numbers)
The DD wins on attacking and armor, and the KK wins on shooting. But i think the DD gets a Dreadnought close combat weapon. i've never used a DD, though, so I don't have an experienced answer for you. it's also much more expensive to take a DD over a KK.

Kans are a great unit if you decide to build your list around them. Are you just starting out? If so, ask around your FLGS/gaming group and see what the most common point size is and write a list for that level. You need the Ork codex to do this.
Also, Atreyu: Don't post full stat lines.
Kans also get a DCCW.

Mega dreads are FW. If your gaming group says that FW is fine, than definitely get one. But if you're talking about normal dreads, get kans instead. Also lootas are always good.

Is there a particular reason that statlines are against the rules? I get why points costs are - that's information in the codex. But GW has the statlines on its own website, so why hide them on a forum?
On topic, I'd go with Kans over Deff Dreads, myself. Kans are cheaper, and not terribly different from Dreads. Plus, taking three of them in a squad with a Big Mek or two around to give them a cover save is a fantastic combo. One of the best lists out there for Orks (though to be fair Orks are a codex with many, many, many builds that work well) is Kan Wall - 9 Killa Kans with a horde of boyz behind them. It can be a frighteningly difficult list to take down.
As for other things, avoid Flash Gitz and Tankbustas (they're very underwhelming for the price, and Tankbustas have an ability that really cripples them) but Lootas are always good, and as has been said before, more Boyz. I've also found that Kommandos can be a real powerhouse with Snikrot leading them. Throw a Warboss in there to give them better leadership and a bosspole, and it can be a great unit that can deal with back line shooters.

Because this forum is not a de facto Codex.

Like I said, I get that. Points and rules and such are in the codex, information which you theoretically have to buy from GW to access. But the statlines are listed on their own website so why is it an issue to post the statlines here?
Never mind, getting way off topic here. I'd like to add to my previous post that I've had a lot of good experience with Lootas, and they tend to do a smashing job of crunching through light armor, or even moderate armor (the look on an opponent's face when his drop pod dreadnought comes down and dies to 45 Loota shots is priceless ). They lack speed and are obviously vulnerable to any sort of assault, but as a stand back and shoot unit, it does a darned good job.

Actually, I'd suggest at least getting a box of Tankbustas. They're bang-up models, and you can always use them as Rokkits in your Boyz squads. Try them as a unit, and see how you like them. Their 'terrible rule' basically just reinforces what you'd want to be doing with them anyways, and when they're not ruled by it (Glory Hogs is the name) they're probably one of the most devestating ranged units in the Codex, alongside Lootas. But they do what their name suggests- bust tanks, and well.

Get a few loota/burna boxes.
Lootas are good, and my pyromaniac soul has a thing for burnas. Used right they can be devastating to some units also
If you buy a boyz box or two you can make burnaboyz from with the spare bits and regular boyz models
Also a Big Mek would be a good buy, preferably a Kustom Forcefield one VERY useful.
I like the Deffdredd model also (it's HUGE), and recommend using it as a combat beast, with 4 dreadnought close combat weapons. Very killy

If you mean a Wartrakk, then no- that's not a transport, but you can give it a Skorcha anyways.
If you mean a Trukk, then yes- conditionally. Trukks are unavailable unless you buy them 'for' a 12, 11, or 10 strong Boyz mob, or a Nobz or Meganobz squad; since they are only dedicated transports. DT doesn't mean that only their 'dedicated' unit can ride, but only the 'dedicated' unit can start inside. If you've bought one, you can start it empty next to the Burnas, and they can embark first turn.

They can also ride in Battlewagons
15 Burnas firing from a Battlewagon can be very nasty

Buy the codex.
Read the codex and the rule book. Meanwhile, put together the contents of the Assault on Black Reach box set.
Read the codes and the rule book again.
Read other people's 1000 and 1500 point lists. Figure out what would be fun for you to play.
Make a 1000 and a 1500 point list, using the 1000 point list as the basis for your 1500 point list.
Post them here, get feedback.
Read the codex again. Start putting together your battle force.
Specific suggestions (From my limited experience):
1. I really like a Big Mec with a Kustom Force Field. I run a horde list, and sticking him in a 30-boyz squad and having another 30-boy squad and a pair of Deffdreads within 6" of him makes for one hell of a scary force marching across the field. Also works great in a battle wagon list if you don't want to play horde orks.
2. A deffkopta with rokkets that makes a scout move to get in your opponent's face will be a great distraction and draw his fire.
3. I like lootas. I love the random number of shots. Pure Orkishness right there.

Everyone likes KFF Meks. However, you might, if you're not going for pure competitiveness, want to try out some other HQ options as well, like Weirdboys, SAGMeks or others.
