I know it's hard at first, hell I'm still horrible,
I guess you have to keep on trying until you get it right...
I usually flatten out the gs and use carving tool and x-acto knife to carve out the folds and shapes

...paint them black and add the chapter insignia on their shoulder pads? They would still be BT even without the Black Templar bits, as long as you paint the good there should be no problem.

I'd never thought about using real chains...That could work
I can get knight styled heads from mates...I suppose if I can get my GS skills on par it would help wouldn't it? XD
Anyone here think that standard marines painted as BT are adequate? I might use them as fill in and placeholders for now...
Hate to toot my own horn but here's my tutorial on GS Tabards and Robes. I actually convert a BT Terminator and add a robe in the video. I tried to make it easy to duplicate as the technique is pretty simple and yields nice results in my opinion. Doing the tabards individually may become time consuming so you might want to make one tabard and maybe create a press mold of it. Hope this helps.
Also, yes real chains from an arts and crafts store are awesome for BT conversions, I get the smallest links I can ( something in the .25mm size). You can find them in the beading and jewelry making aisles. Check my gallery for examples of using real chains and rope necklaces for Bt conversions. I'll be making a video soon on how I make the Black Templar Leg armor plates next.
Here's the video:
I'm doing BT at the moment. I really like the upgrade kit, it also contains stuff for vehicles.
I can't offer much advice beyond what has already been posted, but I can wholly recommend the upgrade kit. I'm pretty sure the store will order one in for you.
From memory it contains enough bits for about 20-30 infantry, one rhino-sized tank and a land raider.
Nothing says you have to convert every single miniature, either. Whether you go the upgrade sprue or GS/chain route, as long as they're all painted as BT, blinging out one in every five or so models will still alter the feel of the force, overall.

No but a fully converted army would look pretty sweet. In for a penny in for a pound right? There was also a good guide on the GW site about decorating your BT troopers with different iconography to make them stand out. Stuff like painting a red and white pattern on an elbow pad or knee pad to denote a veteran of a certain battle or painting a bolter gold to show its been anointed in sacred oils and blessed.
I've taken to printing out patterns such as leg armor plates and Templar crosses onto heavy card stock (110lb). I cut them out carefully and soak them in Zap CA Thin glue to stiffen them up. Very easy way to make some nice conversion bitz that look good. Here's two examples of leg armor and a Storm Shield that I created using this technique. you can also see the chains on the termie and a scibor mini shield bit on the left knee plate.

Granted upgrading them makes em look pretty badass, i tend to keep my upgrades on a ranked scale, my opinion is that your terminators and your close combat squads are more trained and fierce and are honored and battle tested enough to have them. the video on making them with green stuff was outstanding i am going to get some today to try it out.
Isn't there a site that sells green stuff press moulds for this sort of thing? I can't remember it off the top of my head but was considering ording the one for making Space Wolf parts e.g. capes, shoulders, etc I thought they did a BT one as well.
Anyone know the site I'm talking about? I'll do some searching in downtime at work today and see if I can find it again.
