Hi all. I am looking to buy a better light for my desk and thought I would turn to you all for some good recomendations. I used to have this nice flourescent lamp that clipped to the desk and had a magnifying lens on it so I could use it to paint details well, unfortunately it got broke in a move and I can't find another.

So any recomendations? I live in the US and would prefer not to import from the EU, being able to buy it in a store as opposed to online would be even better but I most likely have already scoured those sources and I have turned up empty handed.

Also while we are at it, feel free to give me tips on any other neat items you have for your painting area that make your life hobby easier/better.

Thanks

I saw 3 at the local Hobby Lobby last weekend. My buddy advised against buying one as the last time he tried it it buggered his depth perception, and he ruined the model. Though, given my buddies OTHER extra curricular activies, I suspect the problem with the painting more more chemical than mechanical.

I know Wal*Mart, and I think Target, offer a "buy online, pick up at the store" option if that helps any (probably not).

Do you have 'Maplin' in the US? Think mine was about £17 ($25) It's anglepoise and the daylight bulb is dead bright, the magnifyer is fine also. Great for doing the eyes on Teh mahreens.

Dude, buy yourself a basic desk lamp with adjustable post from walmart for cheap, and get a sunlight bulb for it.

Then, go to Radioshack and ask the guy at the counter for a set of "Helping Hands" for soldiering:

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Get an Ott Light. They're great for the eyes (reduces eye strain) and provide natural lighting. They're intended for hobbyist and I believe Michaels sells them. Get their 40-50% off coupon and you should be set. If you want a cheaper route, you can just buy the ott light bulbs and use a normal swing arm lamp as the base.

Michaels does carry OTT lamps (as well as several other lights, magnifiers, and combinations thereof), if you want to go that route. Personally, I use a simple, cheap (free, actually, as I salvaged it from a basement) gooseneck desk lamp with a daylight bulb. If I wanted magnification, I'd get something independent of my light source, I imagine.
