If I read correctly in order to use a search light the vehicle must be able to shoot. Would moving far enough to prevent shooting, such as a Vendaetta moving 24" or a Rhino moving 12" prevent it from using a search light since it can not fire a weapon? If the answer is yes, movement can prevent search lighting, what about a Storm Raven moving 24" then using POTMS to shoot, would a search light then be able to be activated?

Yes, you must be able to shoot to searchlight. Searchlighting happens at the same time as shooting. When you fire a weapon (and roll to see if you can spot your target), you also light them up with a searchlight, if you so choose.

You actually have no choice anymore - searchlights just work.

Ok, thanks guys. I had a Guard player move his Vendettas flat out using DOW reserve to try and spot light me first turn. He made me feel like I had kicked his dog when I told him he wasn't able to do that.

One more question. How would POTMS and search lights work if you were shooting two targets? Say a Land Raider shooting a multi-melta at one target and a lascannon at another. If you can see the first target it is illuminated but would the second target also be illuminated? This would be an odd occurrence but with Storm Lord running amuck it could happen more than you think.

Thanks again!

With PotMS you still have the target the unit is declaring against, and that is the unit that you spot light.

Can you use a searchlight on something if they are out of range of your weapon? This came up in a game last weekend. My buddy had a chimera that had lost it's multi-laser and only had a heavy flamer. Can he still searchlight my units that are out of range of the flamer?

I see no reason why you can't. You target it, roll your nightfight and then your flamer misses. But the searchlight would still see it.

Right on. That's how we played it, but I was dubious. Probably because I was the one getting shot at
