Heyo, Dakka.

Quick question for you. This isn't really specified in the rules super well, so I'm curious as to how YOU would play it / interpret it.

Say I move a Doom Scythe up in front of a unit, which is (mostly), hidden behind a wall. They are standing in a direct line. We'll say the doom scythe can only see one guy on the end, and 9 others are behind the wall..

I shoot the Death Ray, and draw a line PARALLEL to the unit and just behind the wall, such that it follows the back of the wall and hits all 10 marines.

Line of sight-wise, the Death Ray cannot see the majority of the unit. However, from the beginning of the "Death Ray Line" to the end of the "Death Ray Line" doesn't cross the wall, and goes over the entire space marine unit clearly.

Does this allow a cover save?

In other words: for the purposes of cover, do you draw LOS from the Doom Scythe (regardless of how you draw the Death Ray line?)

Or, do you draw LOS from where the Death Ray line begins to where it ends (neglecting the Doom Scythes LOS)?

No matter how it targets, the weapon is fired from the Doom Scythe and whether or not a unit has cover should be determined from LOS of the firing vehicle.

It is unfortunately not really covered as the ability to do that didnt exist when the BRB was written. I would probably give them at least a 3+ save if not a 2+(most likely a 3+ though)

Blood for the bloo... wait no, I meant for Sanguinius!

I can understand that point of view. Here's where it gets tricky tho...the Doom Scythe technically never "targets" anything with the Death Ray. It just draws a line, anything under it is hit.

Could I draw a line across a unit that the Doom Scythe cannot see? What if I draw a line over a unit I CAN see, and it happens to pass over another unit that is out of LOS - do they get hit?

The rules are not clear. I just want a clean interpretation that won't be considered wrong and TFGish during a tournament.

Yes you can. Just like you can with a Hellhound or a Dreadknight. You don't target anything but a point on the board and you draw a line, or place a template. In the case of a template, you don't have to worry about the cover question. But if a weapon cannot draw LOS to a unt, I'd say that they would most definitely get a cover save.

Just because it targets differently doesn't keep it from following the Vehicle Weapons & Line of Sight rules on page 58 to determine cover for the target unit.

LOS is drawn from the vehicle. If it cannot see any models of the unit they can still be hit, however they get the maximum cover save 4+. (BRB p.24)

Edit: a fortified building can give a 3+ cover save.

A vehicle can get a 3+ save if you are in an arc you cannot see at all.
