For the fifth time in my short life of 40k, I am buying back into the game and starting codex marines. Right now I have played a bunch of different lists, but I have never used terminators. Mainly because of the $50 price per 5. Right now I have been bouncing list ideas around, and it seems like I want to run Calgar. I want him in a squad of 10 terminators and a chaplain. With no honor guard squads in my list. I have geared out my list for about 2k points. I keep thinking that the 265 points can be spent else where but i don't know if I should take him out or leave him in.

It would be nice to have a fearless army, and a marine army that isn't chaos. So tell me what you guys think about Calgar and if he is really worth taking. with the rumors of the new Ed coming out, and the fact that codex marines will be the first codex out, should I wait on Calgar for the new book to see if he gets some better things? Tell me what you guys think.

In general no. He is too expensive for what he does, and you could get a librarian and a beatstick captain for the same points.

In very high point games (2500pts+) he can be useful, as he is a smaller percentage of your points.

chaplains are also not amazing, librarians are almost always a better bet.

Your list might also help to see how you are using them for your army as a whole.

I think Calgar is a machine. He does tend to be a bit pricey for smaller games, but in a larger game he can be a game breaker. Two extra squads of Honour Guard, GoW, he gets to re-roll all failed to wound CC and shooting attacks, the Gauntlets of Ultramar! If you play him fluffy and give him an HG body guard, mount them in a Land Raider, say hello to the built in teleport homer to bring in some TDA backup.
But like I said, you do need a larger game to play him properly, he's a killer in Apocalypse games.

Calgar's not the most efficient character in the game, but he's fun to use. Being able to autopass/fail LD tests is very cool, and he's a tough character in general. If I was playing a 2000+ point game I'd consider him.

Well, Calgar does not make your units fearless. He makes them much, much better. You see, if you lose an assault and your fearless you take wounds based upon how much you lost the combat by. With Calgar, you just say 'oh, I passed' Even if you needed a 2 to pass. This kicks IG psykers in the butt. It lets you ignore snipers, or pretty much anything.

Overall though, hes not worth it. That is a great perk, he just costs to many points for it.

Minor quibble, but Calgar does not help against Pinning attacks as he only allows you to autopass/fail Morale tests (a subset of Leadership tests) and Pinning checks are a Leadership test (but not a morale test).

As others said he is very expensive and doesn't bring as much to the table as Vulkan or other SCs. I still think he can be useful though in a larger list and if you go for a more infantry heavy list where passing Morale tests are huge.

I can't figure out how this is a bonus? I mean it's not that you would actually prefer a squad of honour guard to a squad of (Assault/Normal) Terminators or a Captain's Command Squad.
You pay through the nose for artificier armour & Pw. Upgrades are too expensive, the Grenade Launcher poses a threat only to hordes/weak armored enemies, while the Pw + Champion-Loadout point in a different direction for unit use. The Champion is quite cool, though.
With Special Issue Ammunition and/or Relentless, I'd take them.

Hate to tell you dude, the FAQ last time i read it, when you auto pass a morale check you are counted as being fearless and you have to the armor saves as if you where fearless.

Right now I have him in a squad of terminators, so fearless wounds really don't matter. I can't seem to fit him in under 2k points, so hes an ard boyz character for now. I thank you all for your input and for taking the time to give me your opinions.

When was the last time you read the FAQ? This was an old answer years ago.

The "new" FAQ (which has been out for a few years) has always stated this:

Q. If Marneus Calgar chooses to pass a Morale Check
using his God of War special rule does he, and any unit
he has joined, take Wounds from the No Retreat!
special rule? (p84)
A. No

And they added recently that as long as he is on the table and units have combat tactics rule and are not fearless also can do this:

Page 84 – Marneus Augustus Calgar, God of War,
second sentence
Change to “Whilst Calgar is on the table, all nonfearless units with the Combat Tactics special rule can
also choose whether to pass or fail any Morale check
they are called upon to take.”

He is a HUGE force multiplier. No worries about losing combat, no worries about tank shocks, no worries about psy squads, etc...

How long have i been out of the whole 40k scene. Damn me playing eldar for so long. I thought they ruled that the unit became fearless. Thanks for setting me straight. Now why wouldn't i take him? O man... now all i have to do is buy a $50 box set for one model... yay thank you gw for thinking i would use him in an over priced honor guard. Any ways, Thank you for answering that and for all your and every one else help.
