Subject: Crimson Fists Extreme Edge Highlighting: Ultramarines Blue or Ice Blue?

Hello all,
Trying to decide on whether or not to highlight my CF army with Ice blue or UM blue. My current color scheme is necron abyss foundation, regal blue layered over all but recesses, glaze highlighting with enchanted blue, then extreme edge highlight with pure enchanted blue, and then even more edging with ice blue. Ice blue seems kinda light, almost like it'd be for ultramarines...but ultramarine blue seems darker than enchanted blue. thoughts?

Ice Blue should do the trick since it's a final highlight, and final highlights are the lightest of all. I would test the scheme on a piece of sprue using Ice Blue as the final highlight to see how it turns out so you don't have to strip a model if you don't like how it comes out.

I personally use Ultramarines as the first highlight, followed by Ice Blue, then Space Wolf Grey as the final highlight. My scheme isn't quite as involved as yours, but I'd give it a try.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I used Ultramarines Blue as my edge highlights. If I went a step higher I would probably add alittle enchanted blue to the Ultra .

I really like yours - they turned out great. Awesome detail on the face of the sergeant. May I ask your technique? And also the jewel?
What type of brush do you use for the highlights? I've been using my large brush for everything because all of my smaller brushes (including the expensive 'eavy metal brushes) dry before I even get the tip to the model, and there's always this big bead of dried paint on the tip (like a ball - very small). Suggestions? Thanks!

^ Use a palette, use small amounts of paint, water down your paint.

Thanks for the compliment. The face was a happy accident. I used Tallarn Flesh then washed it with Gryphonne Sepia. After it was dry I just touched it up on the high points with more flesh. It just kind of came out nice after that. I use a smaller brush for edges usually between a 0 and 000 series 7. but when i want it really really small i use an even smaler size like a 8/0 or 10/0 . Very fine but takes very long.
The gem I painted Solid enchanted blue then covered most of that with darker regal blue to just get that lower right edge of it showing, then just a dot of white on the opposite corner. Your basic gem technique really, nothing special.
And yes you should be thinning the paint with water, just enough to loosen it up on the brush. it sounds like its a little too thick as is.
Also correction, I meant to say I would add Ice blue to the ultramarine blue to make the next highlight.
Hope this helps.

Yes, that helps alot! Thank you very much!
Do you use the small brushes for the edge highlights like on his left forearm? I tend to paint those on drawing hte lines almost as if I'm using a pencil. Unfortunately most of the time the paint is dry on the brush by the time I get it to my model, and it has beaded on the front and doesn't come off the brush =(
