Hello,

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding and repainting my vampire counts army but I find I'm lacking direction, I just pick a model/unit and paint it.
So I thought of doing it in 500 point chunks to make things more manageable, give me some focus and allow me to get a game in too.

However I'm struggling to come up with a decent looking 500 point list to use as a starting point. Anything I come up with seems short in the killing department. I should add that I haven't played WHFB since the Nineties so to call me rusty would be an understatement.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

Heros - 125

Necromancer
Wraith

Core - 260

40 Skeletone with Standard and Musician - 220 (Necromancer and Wraith in this unit)
5 Dire Wolves - 40

Special - 90

2x Spirit Host

Total: 475. Leaving me 25 points for a banner/tinkering etc.

My concerns are mainly with the heroes. I don't have points to give the Necromancer any protection unless I lose the Wraith and if I do the Necromancer isn't much of a fighter so where is the damage going to come from? Is attrition the best way to go?

I do like the list from a fluff perspective of a necromancer at the beginning of their career, not powerful enough to bind much to his will yet.

So is it a decent start? Am I better going with a higher point value, say 750 or 1000?

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Depending if you have the models, I'd use Crypt horrors instead of the hosts and maybe swap out the wraith for EQ on the necro or maybe some units...more wolves maybe? At this point level you're not using too many units unless you're goblins anyway.

I'm a big fan of etheral, but it's more boggy then hitty for its points.

What about something like...

Necro w. 50 points of stuff

40 skellies (no command, save points)
5 wolves
5 wolves

3 crypt horrors

...comes out to 499 points if my math is right.

Also keep in mind, the vampire game is all about the war of attrition. You just can keep raising units and hope that you can beat stick things down.
